Robert Smith UltraCure VI

New from Schecter, the Robert Smith UltraCure VI 2012. Out next year. More photos here. (Thanks Brad)

Update: Robert has updated the official site, and also posted some more thoughts in the comments:

SCHECTER ULTRACURE RSV1 BASS AND GALLUP BASS!!!

PS IN OTHER 'GUITAR' NEWS... THERE IS A SCHECTER ULTRACURE RSV1 BASS OUT IN SPRING - AFTER A FEW DIFFERENT VERSIONS I SETTLED FOR A MAPLE NECK MODEL, WITH 3 SINGLE COIL PICKUPS AND 3-WAY SELECTOR SWITCH - IT SOUNDS AND PLAYS AS CLOSE TO MY DISINTEGRATION ERA FAVE FENDER V1 AS IS POSSIBLE... BUT WITH THE ADDED BONUS OF 24 FRETS, EXTRA TONE CHOICES AND NO TUNING ISSUES! IT IS SO LOVELY... AS IS SIMONS SCHECTER ULTRACURE BASS... MORE ON THESE INSTRUMENTS SOON...

PICKUPS
(PS AND FOR ANY THAT WONDER (?!!)... THE RSV1 BASS PICKUPS ARE SEYMOUR DUNCAN VINTAGE JAGUAR SINGLE COILS, AS TO MY EAR THEY SOUND CLOSEST TO MY FENDER V1'S)

  1. i'd love to hear what the weight of this thing is.... i'd have preferred the gunmetal finish over the black too....

  2. it's better looking than what they did to simon's signature instruments...
    can't say i'm a big fan though

  3. Let the Schecter bashing begin in 3..2..1...

  4. I'm sure that it's going to sound really good but it's really Ugly. I do like Simon's bass though.

  5. Assuming that it's made of mahogany like the other UltraCure, I'd bet it weighs a metric ton with hardly any midrange definition and a very nasally sound in the high end. Not what you want if you're not chug-chug-chuggin away at the powerchords.

  7. Will just have to cherish the reflections memory then...

  8. i wonder if any non cure fan has ever bought one of those.

  9. It's actually a baritone guitar - I'm not sure if they are tuned as as low as a six-string bass like the Fender VI, but I think it takes the same strings.

I must admit the Schecter bashing is a little odd - I've read really good reviews of their guitars (including the UltraCure), but more importantly, Robert has been a professional musician for 33 years and can easily afford to buy any equipment he likes. Sure, they have some kind of reciprocal sponsorship deal going with Schecter, but I'm fairly confident Robert knows what he is doing.

I dare say the muddy guitars of 4:13 Dream are more to do with poor mastering rather than poor choice of guitar.

  10. nice baritone guitar. they may use it playing old songs on future tours, unless new material will be played on it too.

  11. I remember hearing that Schecter thought there was no market for the 6-string bass. Funny that they brought this guitar now, in such a terrible economy.

If you've noticed, on Robert's VI, there are tiny holes in the neck of the guitar where the fret markers are. They pour glow in the dark goo into the holes so Robert can glance down when the lights are low. Not that he needs it, really, he hardly ever even looks at his guitar when he's playing. But I'm curious if that's just something they do special for him. Or if it will be on these guitars.

  12. That whole thing is "goo in the dark"... looks horrible. :D

  13. maybe next guitar for porl to?

  14. I like the glow in the dark markers. They come in handy for these guitars. Here's a close up of them:

  15. This is perhaps the classiest, most beautiful guitar that I have ever seen. It makes the 1963 Fender version look like such a pile of junk.
I'm sure that it sounds a million times better as well.

  16. It's a bit...underwhelming. The mahogany body will have the low end, the maple neck brings in the high end snap. If its a basswood body maybe a little softer on the bottom. I think the idea behind these guitars are more mid range budget guitars that gigging musicians can rely on. The hellcat Vi is a vintage Vi, the ultra Vi more modern/metal ish. This Ultracure Vi is more of a jack of all trades that Robert can tweak the eq on via the mixing desk.s. The Ultra Cure is just a Les Paul.

  17. reading robert's ramblings always make me laugh, regardless of what he's saying.

at least he acknowledges what people say about the schecters :P
(i myself know way too little about music to have an opinion)

  18. AND STUFF BUBBLING AWAY IN THE "BASEMENT…"

Another RS cryptical way to say us there are some real news coming soon?

    I really hope so...

    ReplyDelete
  19. We all know RS would never play Schitcures if he had to pay for them, actually go into a music store and audition classic instruments for a tour or session, never in a million years. Let's just leave it at that.

  20. Sorry for the happiness:

Roger wrote that on his fb:

    http://www.facebook.com/rogerodonnellmusic/posts/10150416597846964

Is The CURE coming to Mexico City and South America the next year?

    :D

Ohh i wish too much a confirmation on this.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Upss Roger has made a clarification on that:

He was referring to play his solo stuff on SouthAmerica and he wasn´t talking by any reason of a CURE tour.

    Sorry for the happiness...

  22. The same PUPS as the UltraCure VI will have will be used in the redesigned 2012 Schecter Hellcat VI. The 2012 model is being designed to more closely emulate the Fender Bass VI. The 2012 HCVI will be cheaper and significantly lighter (alder body) than the UltraCure VI. Available in sunburst or black.

And BTW, they're not baritone guitars. They are 6-string short-scale basses. Baritones don't have a 30" scale like these, they don't use the E>e tuning one octave below standard these use, nor do they use the .095>.026 gauge strings. These are quite different animals than the barris.

  23. It's so sad to see that Robert said he was doubting his decision to come out and sign things for the fans. I know SO many people who came away ecstatic and bubbling with joy from their first encounter with him - my 11-year-old daughter included - she got her ticket to her first Cure show signed by him. It really sucks that the scumbags who get tons of crap signed just solely for selling on Ebay could ruin these encounters for the real fans.

Please, Robert - if you read this, don't let one or two opportunistic people ruin the chance to meet you for those people who are genuinely thrilled to be in your presence. Maybe you could limit an autograph to one item per person (if that's possible). I think you could maybe have your security announce that signing will only happen if people don't push and you'll only sign one thing? I don't know what the answer is, but it would really be a tragedy if you let the Ebay hounds drive you away from meeting us who love you sincerely.

  24. @Rev: Maybe Robert could quiz people before signing. Robert "what album is 'Last Dance' from? Ebayer "uhh, the album with 'Spiderman song'?" Robert "get out of here!"

    ReplyDelete
  25. @ Rev: I think what he meant is that there is no point paying $1,500 for a guitar which he signed if the same unsigned guitar cost $300.
He didn't say anything about signing stuff for fans...

    ReplyDelete
  26. @greg - I was referring to this part of his comment:

    I KNOW I KNOW

    I SHOULDN'T EVER STOP AND SIGN (?!!)

    BUT…

which I interpreted as he should not stop and sign things for the fans. What do you think he meant?

  27. Proceeds going to charity... <3

The RS guitars are works of art. I'd be proud to have on on my wall just to look at. Gorgeous and inspired.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I just wish I knew where I needed to be and when to get anything signed...I've never managed to do that with the Cure, and not for a lack of trying.

    ReplyDelete
  29. More from Robert on this matter:

    SIGNING...

IT'S UNLIKELY I WILL STOP SIGNING STUFF... BUT ITS USUALLY CHAOTIC PRE/POST SHOW - THROUGH FENCES/BUS WINDOWS/STAGGERING INTO HOTELS ETC ETC!!! - SO HARD IN THOSE MOMENTS TO DETERMINE WHO IS 'REAL' AND WHO ISN'T... I SUPPOSE MY POINT IS MORE THAT IF DEMAND FOR OVERPRICED SIGNED TAT DISAPPEARS, THE EBAYHOUNDS WILL FOLLOW SUIT... ? (SIGNING "TO XXX... " IS ALWAYS GOOD IDEA, BUT MORE OFTEN THAN NOT IMPRACTICAL... THERE IS USUALLY MORE THAN ONE PERSON TALKING AT ONCE (?!!) AND THE TIME IT WOULD TAKE WOULD LIKELY MEAN I WOULDN'T GET A SOUNDCHECK/GET WHERE I'M GOING/MAKE IT TO BED!)

(I know there are some people who wants to earn fast profits selling autographed stuff but i think the most of the people that awaits to the band outside the venues before and after the shows are genuine fans that wants to have a very special gift from their idols and keeping it as a real trasure and never selling it. I hope Robert don´t stop to share time with his loyal fans)

Sorry for the excesive lenght Craig...
