Roger comes clean...finally! : )
(Thanks to April for the photo)
"Yes I am on stage playing with the band again and hopefully 15 minutes in I haven’t played any wrong notes!
Robert asked me about a month ago to play Bestival and I was very happy to say yes. Playing these songs again, old friends, being up on stage with Robert, Simon and Jason who are really family to me, it is all right.
Looking forward I’m sure there will be lots of exciting Cure projects in the future which I am very excited to be a part of again... "
And on Twitter: "I never lied but was less generous with the truth than normal! Thanks for all the messages! I'm very happy to be back! Good things coming!"
Welcome back, Roger! It has been far too long, and we missed you tremendously!

I love you Roger. Thanks for the update...it's so true what you say about old friends being family; I'm so happy for you (and us!).
ReplyDelete<3
YES!!!
ReplyDeleteroger's far less secretive than robert (in general - obviously not regarding this show), so i hope we'll be kept more up to date regarding what's going on with the band.
ReplyDelete"Welcome back! It has been far too long, and we missed you tremendously! "
ReplyDeletejust wanna echo that if youre reading
tremendous is putting it lightly!
Believe it or not, Roger CAN keep secrets. : )
ReplyDeleteWELCOME BACK ROGER!!
ReplyDeleteso glad and looking forward to the cures future again!
:D
yah he seems to have gotten better with the secret keeping... i was a lil surprised
ReplyDeleteso happy 05-10 era is done & gone
ReplyDeleteMy God!! Someone in the group who knows how to use a computer without accidently knocking the caps lock all the time.. :p
ReplyDeleteThings are indeed looking up!!
OMG can I say I am so f*cking happy about this news! WELCOME BACK ROGER! It is wonderful to have you back in the band once again!
ReplyDeleteeh, i wasn't that surprised to be honest. i thought those tweets just gave it away with all the "good thing i have nothing to do this weekend," and "too bad bestival sold out and i can't go"
ReplyDeleteI really wasn't talking about THIS secret. : )
ReplyDeleteYou could read between the lines and know what was up with this show. He just didn't let on that Porl wasn't with them.
so happy for Roger but I know we would be even happier if his best friend would rejoin the band even just for one concert in the future...
ReplyDeletedrum rolls...BORIS!!! still dreaming...here's still hoping.. :)
i knew Porl wasn't with them because of the incident surrounding my Porl Thompson Corsair purchase...sorry i wasn't more forthcoming, but i swore i wouldn't say anything until after bestival.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened?
ReplyDeleteSo Craig, did you KNOW? Or did you just read between the lines and figure it out?
ReplyDeleteI'm curious how much of an insider we have in our midst! :)
craig, send me an e-mail at butterschaos@yahoo.com and i'll give you the details. i want to keep it off the blog.
ReplyDeletethanks!
welcome back, roger!
ReplyDeleteMonty: There is no way I can answer that question. But nothing to do with being an "insider" or anything like that.
ReplyDeleteDB: Understood. If it's personal, no need to tell me.
Ok ok, after that Guardian journalist seemed to go so easy on RS, I thought I'd ask a hard question. :)
ReplyDeleteNo worries.

ReplyDeleteFunny, I thought it was common knowledge that Porl had left the band. He left towards the end of 2009. It's September of 2011.
ReplyDeleteRemember when Robert said the band was in a state of "flux"?
Well, yeah, many of us knew it, but it was just rumor and innuendo, never officially confirmed. Guess it never will be.
ReplyDeleteYep. But a lot of fans refused to believe it. Rightfully so.
ReplyDeleteYeah, often nothing is officially confirmed with The Cure, until you see it with your own eyes. I understand the hesitation to jump on board.
ReplyDeleteis THIS going to be released on DVD?
ReplyDeleteTweeting during the show Roger? I'm sure Robert is gonna love that.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't tweet that during the show, it was after the show ended. The other message was sent out via his mailing list.
ReplyDeleteAh, good.
ReplyDeleteRogerODonnell - Bestival sold out! and just as I was thinking I might go and watch me old mates play! Oh well you will have to tell me how good it was!
ReplyDeleteSo this isn't lying? right!
Welcome back, Roger!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks Robert for asking him to come back. Will you also ask Perry? ;-)
@jL: Well said!
Very very happy Roger is back!!!
ReplyDeleteThe way Roger spoke to me after Sydney at the Ship of Fools i thought- He hasn't been asked to return(or to play at Bestival) but he certainly would love it..Glad it has happened..By the way, last night at the end of Grinding Halt, Roger threw his tambourine into the crowd....and right into my hands..I missed out on the Bestival Guitar but i got the Bestival tambourine :)
ReplyDeleteYes!!! Welcome back Roger. You've been truly missed.
ReplyDeleteSweet. Apparently he is back for good:

I am so pleased for Roger!
ReplyDeleteWay to go, JC! : )
ReplyDelete@Craig so are there more secrets?
ReplyDeleteI bumped into Roger in one the back stage bars before the PJ Harvey set and after a bit of coaxing he said that he was playing. It was only brief chat but he seemed very happy.
ReplyDeleteThe show was brilliant, the sound, the stage & even the weather - couldn't have asked for a better Saturday night

ReplyDeleteBest thing I have ever witnessed. Hearing bells, expecting plainsong and seeing Roger stroll out to hit those first notes.
ReplyDeleteThe tears were everywhere.
Whilst I am a big fan of the Cure as a 5 piece (2 gtrs with keys), If this line up remains as a 4 piece, and choose to record together, then I am really excited about that prospect.
ReplyDeleteThe space and open sounds of early albums like 17 Seconds & Faith made them the great albums that they are, and a one guitar with keys lineup may steer them in this direction once more - who knows..?
hang on a minute - Bestival was announced first - so Roger was on board for this all along? - he's been back in The Cure ages!

ReplyDeletebut hang on a minute! Roger's message says Robert only asked him a month ago - were they approaching Bestival as a 3 piece? had Robert been trying to tempt Porl? We'll never know. Bugger it - they sound magic.
ReplyDelete@ theseashallnothavethem
ReplyDeleteThat is a great way to think of this kind of four piece... maybe like seventeen seconds!
I liked the no keyboards era of the Cure. It was cool to hear those older songs differently, with guitars and base filling in the keyboards.
ReplyDeleteThat said, while it was cool to hear for a change, I'm happy that keyboards and Roger are back with the Cure.
However, I'm sad to see Porl go.
Dreamy lineup:
ReplyDeleteRobert
Simon
Porl
Roger
