Not too long ago, Robert Smith was telling Hot Press of his love for the late Phil Lynott and in the upcoming issue, we've got the Godfather of Goth Rock once again, this time waxing lyrical on singer-songwriter John Martyn and a whole host of other subjects.
High on the agenda is the forthcoming Cure album, which will be their first since 2008's 4:13 Dream. Cureheads everywhere will be happy to hear that no new collaborations will be getting in the way of its completion.
"I think between now and this time next year The Cure will take precedence over anything else" says Smith.
Elsewhere, Roisin Dwyer has a cosy chat with the not-so-glum-at-all Smith about the Cure-In-Chief's contribution to the new John Martyn tribute album, his relationship with Derry's Japanese Popstars, and why Irish fans didn't get to see his band in 2007.
It's all in the new issue of Hot Press, on shelves now."
Not a word about the future of the Cure in Studio.....SO DISAPOINTING!!
ReplyDeleteI'm out of the country but will be back tomorrow morning. I'll pick up a copy of the mag at the airport and scan it in for you tomorrow at some stage.
ReplyDeleteVery interested to hear what his excuse for skipping Ireland on the 4 tour is !
What about Scotland? The Cure have not played here since 1992!!!
ReplyDelete@SL
ReplyDeleteit says @no new collaborations will be getting in the way of completing the new albuim, between now and n this time next year the cure will take precedence@
so yes that sound s like studio news to me
ahh, interviews? things are starting up again
ReplyDelete@SL also the title of the article is "Robert Smith talks new Cure album"
ReplyDelete@kennymcc
ReplyDeleteBob obviously doens't like haggis ! :-)
to keith you could contact me please?, i have a question for you:jhontaylor81@yahoo.com.ar
ReplyDeletethanks
So now the question shifts from "what's the lineup for Bestival?", to "what's the lineup for recording the new album?"
ReplyDeleteAnd will the Dark Album, which he said was already recorded, minus the vocals, be jettisoned in favor of something totally new? Or will they take those songs, rework them a bit, and still use them on the new album?
And then the biggest question of all...will there be a tour to support the album?
I don't know the answer to any of this, but I'll be damned if I'm not incredibly excited about the future of The Cure right now. : )
And thanks so much, Keith. Can't wait to read it!
ReplyDeleteNew Album in the works...FXXX.....Best News in YEARS!!!
ReplyDeletePS>I want the return of Roger with the Keyboards!!
Can i be so selfish as to implore Robert to ditch the line up and style of the last 2 albums, bring back the keyboards and the feel of "old school" cure. Please Robert, do what you do best.
ReplyDelete@Peter,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. We need some of the old Cure magic back and that includes keyboards.I just wish that Robert had never hired Ross Robinson for 'the Cure'album because i think that he (Robinson) single handedly destroyed what the cure were all about. Simon should have whacked smacked him with his bass when he had the chance.
When talking about the Dark Album as a companion piece to 4:13, Robert originally said it would have a lot more keyboards on it, so I'm hoping that's the road they take.
ReplyDeleteI'm just excited that the 4 year pattern looks like it will hold for at least one more cycle. Sure, it would be nice if they were more frequent, but for the past year, I started to worry that we might not even get that.
If they have something ready, how great would it be for Robert to approach the mic, halfway through the Bestival set, and say, "this is a new one. It's called..."?
I just want new Cure music and more Cure shows. Bestival should be the warm up gig to a world tour next spring. How awesome would that be?
ReplyDeleteOh btw, this joke was making the rounds at the Edinburgh Fringe comedy festival:
'I was in a band which we called The Prevention, because we hoped people would say we were better than The Cure'
FAIL
i also think ross robinson ruined everything. that's one whole cure album that i can hear maybe one song from. MAYBE. that's one whole cure album that bastard stole from me. i really despise that guy and am unhappy with robert for not going with simon's intuition.
ReplyDeletebut that was forever ago, i guess.
i'm excited about the news. i hope to god it's not a 3 piece and that porl will be back.
other than that, i'm open to the sound of the album. dark/light...doesn't matter to me as long as i can listen to it. and they tour.
This is great news except the reality is that we probably won't see this album until 2014 at the earliest.
ReplyDeleteMy excitement level was already huge with Bestival coming up...
ReplyDeleteCure Double Live Album of the Bestival Performance - sorry, everytime they play a big show like this I hope for it...
ReplyDelete@sofia & whoever,
ReplyDeleteas much as i'm really don't like 2004's self-titled too much, i don't think we can totally blame ross robinson. the guy has produced some good stuff - at the drive-in comes to mind. this just isn't really his genre. i don't think you can blame either him or the band. he was a fan, and he really wanted them to have a great album, and i think it just wasn't a match. unfortunate, but i definitely wouldn't say he destroyed the band/ruined everything. they're getting older; they're bound to sound different. 4:13 was definitely a step in the right direction, in my opinion.
lindsey, that may be your opinion, but the at the drive-in album was a fluke. everyone else he's produced for has been crap. i mean limp bizkit? vanilla ice? come on.
ReplyDeleterobert wields all control over the band and it was his choice to use someone who is known for a "nu metal" sound. i blame ross, who should've bowed out because obviously robert was not in his right mind. and robert because he's not a stupid man, but has shown he has some questionable taste in music over the years (hello, collabs)
???
ReplyDelete"between now and this time next year The Cure will take precedence over anything else" says Smith.
So they are far from having something completed, they hope to finish by the end of next year (2013), which means a release the year after (2014), supposedly, because knowing the usual postponement in fact in means a year later (2015).
You can go back to bed everyone...
Oh, I meant 2012, 2013, etc.., but it doesn't change much...
ReplyDeleteWho says that's what he means? Maybe he's saying they record the album at the end of this year, get it out early next year, and then tour until the end of next Summer?
ReplyDeleteThat's just as legitimate as what you just wrote. Why not give him the benefit of the doubt? Wait and see what happens?
If we go by your time-line, then The Cure would need to be his focus for the next 2 years. 1 year for recording, then 1 for promotion and touring, if he chooses to do so.
Robert has been full of surprises lately, so let's wait and see what he's got in mind before getting all pessimistic.
Honestly, I think great things will come from this.
for me the selftittle album was much better that 4:13 dream.
ReplyDeleteit sounds to the cure more agressive perhaps but the b sides were even better than ever.
4:13 dream was not the cure and the production was horrible.
but but you can listen to a hundred times underneath the stars the only wonderful song in the album. So Future is not very hard to think that it's gonna be better.Just need a keyboard and will be much better
@sofia i don't know, i just don't think a producer can "ruin" a band. even if you're a bad producer, a band's either making good music or they're not - some blame has got to go the bands themselves.
ReplyDeletenow regardless, i don't think the cure is "ruined."
anyway, agree to disagree :)
Dave Allen to the white courtesy phone, we have an old friend on the line... he says he wants to make an album, but I can't be sure. There's a keyboard in the background making a racket.
ReplyDeleteJust sayin'. It would be cool.
ReplyDeleteYeah, brilliant! But what happened to the other half of 4:13???
ReplyDeletenew album news is great, but it can be interpreted in so many ways. i hope for other interviews within a month around bestival to help piece together a better picture of what lies ahead.
ReplyDeleteas far as the albums [the cure/4:13 dream]?...i give them credit for always trying something new. i agree -4:13...- wasn't produced/ engineered as well as -the cure- but robinson wasn't in my opinion the best option in retrospect... perhaps coming out of -bloodflowers-, going with robinson as a challenge seemed good on paper but didn't become cohesive among all members as other cure tangents[??]. 4:13 just needed KEYBOARDS! and smoother transitions.
i always welcome and respect new cure ways of approaching their compositions. just hope they learn from the past two unsound [somewhat erratic] albums.
[the past two albums along with their b-sides could be mixed together in various track orders to make a better listening experience...that's what i've experimented with.]
I for one, actually love the self-titled The Cure! Listen to it all the time, and have been a fan buying every album on release day since Seventeen Seconds! And I can honestly say, I have NEVER been disappointed. Seems I have grown with The Cure simultaneously. Now are there some albums which rank much higher than others, for sure! Still waiting for the 3rd installment of Trilogy concerts, to include The Top, The Head on the Door, and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me! Now that will be a show I WILL NOT MISS! Aloha
ReplyDeletei don't care when it comes out as long as The Cure are The Cure! woot!
ReplyDeleteSome of you seem to think that all Robert has to do to finish an album is snap his fingers and add keyboards!
ReplyDeleteThe creative process is hard work! It's scary! It's unpredictable!!!
An album every 4 years is pretty amazing if you really think about it.
I'm sure Robert is ALWAYS working on the next album! I'm very happy he's taking the steps to release new work. As a loyal Cure fan, i don't think we can really ask for much more...
"next year" isn't that like 5 years in cure time?
ReplyDeleteYES. I WANT NEW CURE MUSIC. :D and perhaps world tour maybe...!
ReplyDeleteRobert, Simon plus keyboards - these are my core requirements for the new album. The rest is negotiable. :-)

ReplyDeleteSounds like it might a good time to drag out the COF sofa.. :)
ReplyDeleteWonderfully pretty!
ReplyDelete@notherbob - and the CoF Cider!! :D
ReplyDelete*Waves to Rev'*
ReplyDeleteHmmm.. yes, there will be three vital things I'll be needing for Bestival: The trusty virtual COF sofa, plenty of cider and my laptop!
To those lucky peeps who are going to Bestival, PLEASE remember us!!
I also hope keyboards feature prominently on the next album.
ReplyDeleteI’m also in the bracket of preferring ‘The Cure The Cure’ to ‘Dream 4:13’ – I liked the rawness of it and it gave the album a certain sound, whereas 4:13 is a bit everything and could have been better if it was only 10 songs.
Do we have any more info from this interview?
ReplyDeletethanx
Just home from travelling and picked up the magazine at the airport. As I said I will scan it and send lkater but here's the main points ;
ReplyDelete1. Talks again about wanting to work with Severin again and that The Glove would be top of his list of future collaberations !
2.He's looking forward to Bestival because they havent played a proper Cure show in years. "its the longest we've ever gone" with out a show. He hasnt decided what they're going to do or how they're going to do it.
3. He says it will kickstart them back into work again and into the second part of the album !!
4. He's not sure if the band wants to complete the follow up to 4:13 dream. They're kinda avoiding discussing it !!
5. As the years go by the tours get shorter...so thats why they don't do dates in every country anymore. to keep the shows fresh he feels you have to reduce the amount of shows. Bands who flog themselves to death end up as imitations of themselves
6. Two more collaberations done and will come out this year but he can't talk about either of them
7. However between now and this time next year The Cure will take precedence over anything else 2Until I get the second half of this album out I wont do another collaberation"

ReplyDeletesomeone could buy me an issue from this magazine?
ReplyDelete"collaberations" Great word! Though i am quite of fan of most his collaborations, some are indeed more like aberrations (Make me bad springs to mind)..Cure wheels are in motion!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Keith! I am ridiculously excited this morning, thanks to you. And Robert, of course. : )
ReplyDeleteFinally we've got some news of them. Though I cannot wait for more, I'm glad to read this.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. :)
Well, it wasn't Ross who wrote "Taking Off", "I don't know what's going on" or "Never", was it?
ReplyDeleteRobert did a good job of destroying that album all by himself.
I'd love to see Robert ignore all fan expectations and instead do something really fresh and surprising (like he did all thru the 80s). But those days are long gone, sadly.
ReplyDelete@this..etc
ReplyDeletesurely the last few records have ignored fan expectations?
did the fans expect ross? want more noise?less keyboards etc etc
i think what you mean is you want robert to comply completely with fan expectations - to go back to the sound of the eighties ... seems to me anyway
personally im glad there not repeating100% what they did back then
..not that i dont love those old records
ReplyDeleteoh right -- that is what i meant.
ReplyDeleteOooh, exciting!!!
ReplyDelete
