sorry, love them both and don't really understand why someone should hate the one or the other. both make/made very unique music and hate has nothing to do with music in my opinion!!!! (and i even love paul weller and the fall)
Same here. I was asked to write the article, but I can't. Love them both. Supposed to be a "fun" article centered around the 25th anniversary of the Queen is Dead album, and they already have someone writing a "Love The Smiths, hate The Cure" bit.
that's totally me, i can't standdd the smiths, but i don't know if i feel like writing a few hundred words about it. wouldn't really know what to write.
Love them both but hate Smiths' fans cuz they're well..you know. It makes sense that a smiths' fan would do this because they're just like their leader ...Moz is a hater...the original hater and very miserable...not a compliment. Why don't we all break open an Oscar Wilde book, listen to a little Elvis then switch over to a James Dean movie....ice cream cone anyone?
I love The Cure and like some of The Smiths stuff. I don't have any problem if anyone likes The Smiths but there really is a difference between the two bands in that The Cure's music seems timely and timeless, inevitable and archetypal. Many of their songs have that quality to them where they feel like they've been around forever, existing in some immortal world somewhere just waiting for Robert and crew to convey them to the rest of us mortals, while also seeming very fresh and urgent. The Smiths music is, well, some good music. Can't hate it and I do enjoy it from time to time but it doesn't suck me into the same wonderful universe of sound that The Cure's music does.
the cure songs are timeless (no question about that) but a lot of smiths and mozzer songs have very charming lyrics and johnny marr is ace. and for paul weller: this man has soul and still rocks after all those years with the jam and style council. and for the fall: they are unique and real pearls. but after all: the cure will stay my favourite band of all times!
Bit of a useless name dropping here and totally not thread related but Paul Weller has just moved in next door to me,seen him 3 times in a month...would be more fun if one of the band member had instead of him:)
True confession time..I was a Smiths fan before I was a Cure fan, and if not for The Smiths, and them getting me into "alternative" music, I may have never found The Cure.
And from 86-89, I would always rank The Smiths/Moz ahead of The Cure in my list of favorite bands. Oh it was pretty close, and there wasn't much space between TS, TC, and Depeche Mode, but TC were always 2nd.
And then Disintegration was released and changed everything. : )
Love them BOTH but love The Cure more. And as far as the articles go, I'd say the one in favor of The Smiths makes a better case. He makes points about the music and the writing but the other guy just talks about how much of a dick Morrissey is. Sorry, but being a turd doesn't mean your music sucks. If I had never heard either band, I'd vote for The Smiths.
Really after all these years can we give up this argument! And I agree with Skraps, Love The Cure & Love The Smiths but I really do dislike Moz's solo stuff!
