Cure play Bestival 2011!

The Cure have announced that they will be headlining Bestival on Sept. 10th, 2011. It is being billed as their only European show of 2011 (actually, Robert's quote says "only European festival show"). Tickets are available now. Not a rumor, not a dream, The Cure are playing live again! Thanks for the early Christmas present, RS!
BBC 6 Music has an interview with Rob Da Bank about the show.

Update: About that "only European show in 2011" vs. "only European festival show in 2011" bit - "I’ve asked the promoter to clarify that. RS signed off the press release as it is but he may have overlooked the discrepancy so I’ll let you know once he comes back to me."

And about single day tickets - "There aren’t any plans at the moment to sell day tickets this year but have asked the promoter to confirm that, again once he comes back to me then you’ll be the first to know." (Thanks Aidan)

  1. I got my tickets. See you all in September wohoo!

  2. God damn £160 tickets and no day ones available?

I only live across the water from this so I don't really think I can miss it but ouch that's pricey...

    ReplyDelete
  3. Ramoth - Won't there be single day tickets released later? Not sure how this festival works, but I know a lot of them release the 3/4 day passes first, then do the single days later. If it doesn't sell out before that.

  4. With Porl gone (is he still gone?), is Robert going to try to recruit Perry & Roger to come back? Or will it be a three-piece? Strange.

    ReplyDelete
  5. If they do single day tickets I am more likely to venture down.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Monty - That's going to the most interesting part of the show(s) next year, just who will be in the lineup. Even if RS brings in someone new, there will be a lot of time for that person to learn the songs.

  7. Porl left or what? please explain, i missed that part

    ReplyDelete
  8. monty - porl never left, they never officially announced that

i want go. cranes AND 65dos with the cure?? but my college classes might already have started by the time this happens!

    ReplyDelete
  9. When was it announced that Porl was leaving again? Huh? How did I miss that one?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I really want to go to this festival in Europe but it probably won't happen for me so I really hope The Cure announces at least one show in the U.S.

  11. dj,
I know they never officially announced anything with Porl. But there have been a lot of rumors in the past year. At best, relations are strained, and at worst he quit.

But it will be interesting to see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  12. DJ - While there was never an official announcement, I can assure that Porl did indeed leave/was let go. 100% true. The only question is whether he'll be back or not.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Seems that no bridge is ever really truly burnt in Cure world. Just singed a bit. : )

    ReplyDelete
  14. porl will always be a part of the cure whether he is in it or not, i shant be too worried!

    ReplyDelete
  15. A good announcement, but I hope this is the start of a busy cure 2011. Would prefer independant cure shows and am curiousbout the 2011 line up.

Is a Faith inspired show still on the cards?....

    ReplyDelete
  16. I hope Porl is still with them (I also hope Roger pops back in a bit too). These guys are like one big family, there are fights and make-ups etc.

The important thing here is that Robert is confident that The Cure can be performing by 2011 and that hopefully means they put on a kick-ass show for me and they feel they can finally release and tour a new album soon.

  17. Currently trying to get clarification on this "only European show" vs. "only European festival" thing. And looking into single day tickets.

    ReplyDelete
  18. DJ - no need to worry about it. It happened last year, and time heals most wounds. For all we know right now, Porl will be with them again at Bestival.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It says on the website that no day tickets are available...

So no it looks like the full weekend ticket is all that's available...

Bit of a bugger when I've just lost my job though...

Really will have to weigh this up...trouble is how long have we got before it sells out?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Roger will join the band in this festival....confidential...not a rumour

    ReplyDelete
  21. I know with Bestival that they sell single day tickets to Island residence for a lesser price closer to the date of the festival. Or at least they did that last year.

I have no idea if they sell them for other people though. But hey, they haven't announced the other headliners yet, might be some more acts to see too.

    ReplyDelete
  22. As I mentioned in another thread £342 for 2 tickets is expensive, plus travel to the Island etc... but having gone to Berlin for the Trilogy Shows I know cash must be splashed!

I'm hoping that The Cure set doesn't clash with Primal Scream doing Screamadelica as it would be good to hear that as well.

On The Cure front I'd like to have some keyboards and to hear Charlotte Sometimes live again.

  23. Here's the info so far on the "only Euro show" thing and single day tickets:

"I’ve asked the promoter to clarify that. RS signed off the press release as it is but he may have overlooked the discrepancy so I’ll let you know once he comes back to me.

There aren’t any plans at the moment to sell day tickets this year but have asked the promoter to confirm that, again once he comes back to me then you’ll be the first to know."

    ReplyDelete
  24. I noticed on the ticket page and website it says "no day tickets"...
I don't want to miss out, but I'd prefer a single day ticket for saturday.. hmm now to wait...or get the full weekend ticket just in case?....arrrggg...stress.

  25. I will say that the Isle of Wight is a beautiful part of the UK, there are a lot of things to see and do. Robin Hill (the festival grounds) is one of the last places in the UK to see the native Red Squirrel and it has a few fairground rides etc.

    Weather is usually amazing too.

  27. Interesting quote from Rod Da Bank on 6 Music: "We've got them for their only European show of 2011, pretty much one of the only shows you'll see in the world from them next year and it's made my year. "This year it's been right down to the wire. I got told they've turned everything else down and you're the last one in there. It's 90% going to happen, maybe it will, maybe it won't, you're going to find out tonight you're going to find out tomorrow, it's been albsoultely excruciating. "

    ReplyDelete
  28. "one of the only shows you'll see in the world from them next year"

    Worldwide dates to follow?

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Craig

So you´re confirming Porl is gone,i mean,he´s no longer part of the band now?

The band is a 3-members gang?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mad Bob - Absolutely not! He WAS gone. Last year. No idea if he will be back or not. Plenty of time to get that sorted before next September.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Craig.

    Ok..Craig.Thanks for answer.

You know,we hear about a new date and we´re starting to guess all the details.

Best way to start a month knowing CURE will be back on the road.

    xD

  32. "All Tickets:
    - include camping.
    - will incur a booking fee.
    - there are No Day Tickets."

seems pretty clear to me that they're only doing full weekend tickets.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I wonder if Lollapalooza is the other show? Surely the Chile gig is too far apart from the Bestival date. But Lolla Chicago on the other hand...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Lindsey - It doesn't hurt to make sure, before fans shell out that much money, if they don't need to.

S - Nah, the only US festival will be Voodoo Fest in New Orleans on Halloween weekend. : )

    ReplyDelete
  35. Btw, I'm getting/doing these updates while trying to repair some Christmas elves for the yard. Just thought you all should know. :)

Which reminds me, now that The Cure are up for playing a few shows next year, you know what to ask Santa for this year. : )

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks Craig.

So we have a date, possible Voodoo show?

    Possible lineup change?

    Intriguing.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh guys, Channel 4 in the UK broadcast Bestival, of course in my capacity as cure video poster, I will try my upmost to gain this footage. ;)

Still waiting on that 02 show video!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Aaron - No, just joking about Voodoo. But I know they are interested in having them, and I will make sure they know there might be a chance this year.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love how we're all making plans for something that's almost a year away. : )

So, who's going to do the live reports for CoF, if I don't make it there? : )

    ReplyDelete
  40. craig, you know too much! ;)

won't be making it to europe this year, but i'll be damned if i'll miss the cure AND new orleans. let's make this happen.
(reminds me...craig, did you ever watch Treme? thoughts?)

i'm moving (back) to portland mid-february. just missing sebadoh play their bakesale reissue show so i hope i can count on the cure to be in vancouver, seattle, oregon and cali!

    ReplyDelete
  41. "I wonder if Lollapalooza is the other show? Surely the Chile gig is too far apart from the Bestival date. But Lolla Chicago on the other hand..."

They could also very potentially do both. The Chile one just seems like the most substantial rumour at the moment just because they're using his picture on the website. And it will have been some 15 years since their last South American trip.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would do live reports but I'm the worlds slowest texter. Might chime in with the odd random observation though. Definitely gonna do a review and take plenty of pictures too if I get a good view.

I know it's nearly a year away but I can't wait to see them (and you guys) there!!

And I'm asking Father Christmas for a release date for the dark album. Seems like the next logical thing to ask for.

    ReplyDelete
  43. @halo eighteen

am i crazy or i don't see the cure when i click the mas info banner on chile's lollapalooza website. i get snoop dog, rage against the machine, madonna, and chris cornell. did they change the images?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yep, they changed it! Must have been today when they did - sneaky =/

    ReplyDelete
  45. WOO!! i have hope for live shows elsewhere in the world now :D im 16 and still in high school so there is NO WAY for me to get there... but I'm just excited for hopefully more 2011 shows!!! *crosses fingers*

    ReplyDelete
  46. WOW: that's a lot of pesos. plus the rest of the line-up is hardly worth a transatlantic journey... but, the isle of wight is gorgeous and it won't be too hot in Sept.

poor porl. he's too mellow to cause much trouble ~ this sounds like more of roger's crap gossip ...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Seriously, are most of you really that excited about this? Sure, I suppose if you live in the area, but really, how many of you are going to spend hundreds of dollars to fly to Europe to watch a concert? At this point the only Cure related news I'll be excited about will be the headline, "Cure are back in the studio recording..."

    ReplyDelete
  48. JPX, I agree with you to a point. However, it is good to see something - anything - finally start to happen in Cure world again.

    ReplyDelete
  49. @JPX i don't know, personally i get way more excited about them playing than recording. i could live fine without a new album - the prospect of watching a recording of a new show gets me really excited though.

    ReplyDelete
  50. JPX, if it's the only Cure show of 2011, I'll consider it money well spent :D

However, should they announce any US dates, then I would reconsider the transatlantic travel.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I really wanna go. How sure are you guys that they're playing Saturday when it says Thursday-Sunday?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm surprised no one else has pointed out that Crystal Castles are also playing. Hyooooooge cameo potential there! A three-piece Cure could be very interesting..but I'm just not sure how into the whole thing I would be anymore.

I live in Germany so I am intrigued, but it's just too vague for me to commit to a trip right now. No single-day tickets, we don't know who is in the band, what day they're playing, etc. Kind of a bummer. But maybe...we'll see what happens in the next ten months!

    GS

    ReplyDelete
  53. Andy - The Cure are headlining Saturday Sept. 10th. It's right there in the press release:

"The Cure is coming to the party to headline Saturday night at Bestival."

"I'm still not sure what we've done right but I'm overjoyed that they are coming as Saturday night headliners."

    ReplyDelete
  54. i'm gonna go with roger is not rejoining. he's laughing at some 'rumors' on his twitter.

    ReplyDelete
  55. even if he were, that doesn't really fix anything, they're missing a guitarist :/

    ReplyDelete
  56. Doesn't fix anything? Didn't you see Roger playing guitar on the Dream Tour? He can play keys AND guitar. Also plays a mean tambourine! : )

But as he said yesterday, the Batphone hasn't rung yet.

We have 10 months until the show(s), and I'm betting we hear rumors of many guitarists possibly joining the band. What's Reeves Gabrels doing these days?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Reeves would be a fantastic fit. I'm not sure how he's dealing with his health issues these days. Anyone know if he's up for it?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Reeves plays live fairly regularly in clubs here in Nashville--I would LOVE to see him play with the Cure!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Wow, so Porl really did leave the band last year? Was it because he didn't like not doing anything, or was it the family thing?

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think it would be weird having anyone other than Porl or Perry :/

    ReplyDelete
  61. I find it hard to believe that Robert would agree to do a live date without knowing in advance that he has a full solid line-up. Yeah I know it is nearly a year away but I can't imagine him saying 'yes' without having 100% confidence that they can perform.

    ReplyDelete
  62. JPX:

You really think that most of the obsessed fans are not going to travel anywhere in the world to see Robert after not seeing the Cure live in over 2 years?

For many of us, the Cure is a live experience, and we will go wherever, whenever.

Personally i could care less if there ever was a new album....
There is more than enough old songs to dust off to make over a decade of touring worthwhile to see..

    ReplyDelete
  63. The band could play as a 3 piece. If there's only 2 or 3 dates to play, and they are festival sets, one could easily fill 90 mins with songs that don't require a second guitar.

Heck he could even bring Lol in to do some keys. Not likely, but..

    ReplyDelete
  64. oh god no reeves. he is even worse than uncle fester.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Uploaded a new show today,
    10/29/87 Frankfurt

    The Cure Live!

I hope there is a keyboardist on stage in september, roger or not, just hope it's added back in.

  66. 120 minutes+ and South America. Sounding good.for 2011!

  67. THE CURE (ONLY EUROPEAN SHOW 2011)
creeeeeak... AS OF DECEMBER 3RD 2010, THIS IS THE ONLY CURE PERFORMANCE OF ANY DESCRIPTION BOOKED FOR 2011... WE WILL NOT BE PLAYING ANY OTHER EUROPEAN FESTIVALS, AND UNLESS SOMETHING REMARKABLE HAPPENS, WE WILL NOT BE PLAYING ANY OTHER EUROPEAN SHOWS! THIS IS AS CLEAR AND AS DEFINITE AS WE CAN BE... SO IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE 120+ MINUTES OF THE CURE NEXT YEAR (AS WELL AS A DAZZLING PANOPLY OF OTHER GREAT ACTS) WE WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU GO TO BESTIVAL!
