Trouble at Rhino

Update: Rhino responds to reports of their death. (Thanks Dodge)

Slicing Up Eyeballs and Glorious Noise have details about Rhino laying off staff in all departments. That doesn't sound good for future Cure releases at Rhino. But surely someone else could step in and take over the program, right? Or at least put out Disintegration and Wish, which you would have to think would be the top sellers of the reissue program. Would you be satisfied with a digital download version or do you want physical media? I want physical media, but those of us who feel that way, seem to be a dying breed. (Thanks Boyd and Scott)

  1. Don't know about need, but I damned sure want physical media.

Robert, please say something! Surely there is no harm in dropping a tidbit into the sea of hungry fans?!

    *SIGH*

  3. I agree; digital is just not the seem as having the physical thing in your hands.

    Hopefully someone can intervene.

    **fingers crossed**

  8. These days digital media is fine for me but something like The Cure or a few select others I do want the physical media. However given the choice between digital only and NOTHING, I will take the digital only route.

  9. Long live the physical. I don't want phone sex and I don't want digital music. Haha. Digital only music is for the dogs, IMHO.

  10. Darn it, here we go again.

My vote is for physical and my wish is for identical packaging.

  12. I think it's time that RS started his own record label. He probably knows more about the music business than any label he ends up signing with. Better yet, Roger has his own label "99 Times Out of 10" that RS can sign up with.

  13. Does anybody know why the forum on the Cure official site was closed?
Does anybody know how Robert Smith is doing, I mean he had a bad injury with his hand in May...
Does anybody know weather The Cure have already deeply retired?
I really wonder why there are NO speculations on these issues posted?

  14. Of course all of us collectors want physical releases. What's the damn point of a reissue if it's not to have the discs and artwork and printed words? Those who only want downloadable would be happy with the 1992 and 1989 versions of the albums; they won't care. I don't mind waiting, but they'd better come out and I'm sure they will.

  15. I want physical releases !!! I want & need them in my collection ! :-)

  16. Veselin: Robert used a guitar pick which had been cursed by an evil musician. He tried to disguise the wound but it would not heal. He traveled to an obscure Caribbean island to meet with a voodoo priest. Unfortunately because he did not believe in the voodoo gods, the priest was not able to help and Robert has become a zombie. He now travels the waters in a ship with black sails, trying to slake his thirst with rum, Chinese art and American girls. We may never hear from him again.

  19. dying breed indeed.

nobody cares about quality, they just want it fast and easy.

    mp3 format is killing music.

id be all for digital releases if they were offered in lossless, but unless somethings changed, people seem to be content with a 192k mp3 of their fav artists new record.
    very sad..

  20. I bought my first digital record this week...and it's just not the same! I miss it so much being able to look at the artwork, read all the lyrics, I spend hours at this! I want the physical release!

(although I think these 'deluxe' reissues design are poorly made - not to say crap -and there's absolutely nothing 'deluxe'! Only just a 4 sheets folded booklet and quite common double cd)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would pay $20 for a download of Disintegration remastered(properly) in lossless, at 24-bit/96khz.

Correction, $20 and my eye teeth.

  22. I always prefer the physical!

    (mmmmmmmmmmmm.....)

    ReplyDelete
  23. No question.

Not only do I want physical media. I'd really like DVD-A or SACD one day. Not so much for the multi-channel crap, but for the higher bit rates.

  24. I want the physical media. I have the shelf space reserved for them.

  25. I doubt there are many people who prefer Digital to Physical. Just people who prefer to carry their entire music collection on an MP3 player no bigger than a cigarette lighter (and to download music illegally of course).

Besides, all week in the British press, we have been lambasted with "musicians" (who for the most part couldn't cobble together a coherent sentence) attempting to come up with a suitable punishment for those who illegally download.

My point being: Deluxe Editions with bonus material are aimed more so at collectors willing to pay full price, therefore everyone involved is happy.

  26. I WANT A PHYSICAL release for sure...I'm dying for it !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Physical for sure, anything else will just be annoying

    ReplyDelete
  28. Despite the scream inside my mind (AAAAAAAAAHHHHH WHERE'S/HOW'S THE BAND???), I want my CD with art, silly written comments from the band, lyrics to sing along to... God, I'm old!

Like Jane, the space in my shelf is already selected for the reissues!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Heya, sofia! I was a Sassy subscriber form the very first issue. Long after they folded, I subscribed to Jane, and was with them until it died, too. Jane was not nearly as good as Sassy, and in the end it really began to spoil, but I stuck with it. ha!

  30. Apart from the claim that they aren't DOA, Rhino's weasel words don't clarify or deny what was reported. Did I miss the part about The Cure? Did someone confirm that the remasters will happen in yes-I-can-touch-it form?

Stay tuned for the continuing saga of...

    :-p

    ReplyDelete
  31. I want the CDs, obviously. Yes, I will end up ripping them for my iPod, but I want shiny lossless discs for home listening and full color artwork to look at.

And...never underestimate the value of that new CD smell.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Did your 4:13 Dream copy smell THAT smell?

I thought I'd get intoxicated. bought another copy but I don't open the other, just sometimes.. to smell it ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Does 4:13 smell the same around the world?!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Let's get physical, physical!!

    Physical all the way baby.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love to introduce my big cd into that sweet Player

    It feel so Good

    ReplyDelete
  36. You gotta love pervy Cure fans! ;-)

OT, I checked their myspace page today; no updates since May 22! Hello? Anybody out there? Craig/Chris, are they alive and well?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wouldn't it be nice if Robert updated his webpage once in a while to help clear up the confusion?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Re-release the whole batch from the beginning, this time with DVD with 5.1 mixes and videos and documentaries, like DM did!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't think Robert would dare do that. As the space-time continuum would certainly rip itself in two from the goodness if he did.

    ReplyDelete
  40. So was the 'dark album' a total lie or what? I thought it was suppossed to accompany 4:13.

    The Cure is so annoying

    ReplyDelete
  41. Paul- I discussed the 'dark album' with Keith Uddin in Vegas. It definitely exists, it's definitely beautiful.

I think robert's working hard on getting the remasters finished, as well as promised docs etc. Silence is not necessarily a bad thing in cure world (and anyway the whole world seems to jump down his throat every time he does have something to say... I'd stay quiet too!)

my theory is that's he's holding off on all of this until he resolves (dissolves?) relationship with TMU. And establish a new deal with a company that shows due respect..

Then we'll have so much new physical cure product that we'll be beside ourselves!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't know how others feel about this, but I think Robert should have taken Chris Parry up on his offer and taken over Fiction Records..
Towards the end of the last contract I know the two had a falling out, over what I'm not entirely sure. But Robert being the way he is, would've had too much pride to talk it out..
I honestly think he (Robert was crazy not to accept, all the groundwork was there, the keys just needed to be handed over, so to speak..
If worst comes to worst, to settle this debate, the remaining remasters will go out on iTunes. Yes it's not ideal, I would love to have a tangible product too but let's face it, it's probably more practical: Those who want it can get it without the hassle of packaging and distribution and pleasing record companies as to "when the right time" is..
I used to be a 'worrier' when the band went AWOL but now I agree with explodingboy..
Think of Robert and co as Groundhogs, they're in their little burrows busily scurrying about, doing what they need to do in their own time and they'll come out whenever they're ready..

    ReplyDelete
  43. It is typical behavior, but I do so wish that Groundhog Robert would come out of his hole for a moment and say something to his demanding, critical, gratification-seeking, I-want-it-now fans (e.g., me)... ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. What about Robert's desire for more spontaneity / surprise... just like the old days! (he so often complained about Internet impact on those things).

I'm sure he will announce great things just before they happen.

Just hope it will be soon. Can't wait...

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi Notherbob
Did Chris Parry really offer the direction of Fiction to Robert? The last thing that I read was that Chris tried to sell the rights of Robert's songs without his knowledge.
And then was this story about Robert getting the tapes from Fiction to a warehouse in his car...
I think I´d like Robert to own Fiction and decide his own destiny... but I guess he didn´t accept because he wanted to be involved only with the 'arty' stuff of music.

  46. I don't care when the Cure release new music. It's the saying things that turn out to be false later that drives people crazy. 4:13 was said to be a double. Nope, not a double. 4:13 was suppossed to have a 2nd disc as a compliment to the first. Nope, no accompanying disc. The Cure is suppossed to go on tour. Tour post-poned.. To finish the album. Tour over, album post-poned again, for maybe the tenth time. It's no wonder the album didn't sell, everyone was burned out already by months of hearing that the album was about to be released. The hype was too big for any album to live up to, even a good one.
    Nobody likes to be teased.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'd like to point out however that this is basically my problem because I spend too much time on the internet searching for tid-bits of information about the Cure. Before the internet I'd find out about a new album when I visited the record store. I wasn't scouring the internet latching onto little desperate pieces of information

Right now YOU are the one saying false things that drive people crazy. 4:13 was said to be a double? YEP, IS a double.

    ReplyDelete
  49. isn't a double 2 discs?

er, sorry for whining. I love the Cure, really

    ReplyDelete
  50. Paul K said...isn't a double 2 discs?

"Yep" and that's what you get when you buy the vinyl - 2 LPs - just like every other album they've released the past 18 years.

I didn't think you meant two CDs since you later went on to bemoan the lastest not having "a 2nd disc as a compliment to the first."

    ReplyDelete
  51. well that's what you get for thinking I guess. Sorry that didn't work out for you

    ReplyDelete
  52. And YOU actually thought they'd release a 2CD studio album? Why, that's like not thinking at all.

  53. Rhino has always been spelt with a capital T.
