I'm crying as well but for different reasons. How can they fuck up the chorus that kinda way??? Everything's perfect... the music, the sound, Porl, but Robert's singing here is aweful... hope the rest of the song is better than this.
the mixing makes me cry. it doesnt sound ethereal like i was expecting.. in fact, the effects ANNOY me.
1) WTF happened to Porl's guitar?? what did they do to it?? it doesnt spiral gracefully mandolin like it did in Rome. it gave the song wings back then!
2) the eerie beautiful effects i heard in the rome version, the one like a drowned choir.. gone.
3) roberts vocals annoy me. i cant believe it.. my ears. oh. the mixing killed it.
i am severely fucking disappointed. i only have anguish and despair after listening to it. im off to cry tears of a different kind.
Huh? If I click to the link above I come to a site where I can listen to three 30 seconds samples of The Perfect Boy, The Only One & The Hungry Ghost. 30 seconds samples not more... it's start with the "swallow down as the hunger grows" part for me?????
I don't understand why people like this song so much. But the song could have sounded so much better if Porl's part was a keyboard string, Jason was using Boris' drumset plus the mix had some reverb to it. Everything sounds so dry and sterile these days. Poor production has plagued The Cure's music for the last 12 years. So many good or even great songs have gone to waste.
beau - UTS.. switch.. sirensong.. the scream, everything but the real snow white.but my hopes have come crashing down for the album. sadly. what have they done??? i dont know who is they, but they messed up the songs =/. i think people prefer the live versions because the studio lacks oomph. Studio THG sucked the emotion out of it. in fact.. if i compare the self titled with the mixing on 4:13 so far.. i EVEN PREFER TC'S MIXING!! shoot me now.
DJ: *hugs more*. I'm sure it will be fine :). They can't have cocked up Switch, UTS or The Scream i'm sure. Craig says THG is the only dissappointment, so I'm trusting that :).
God, looks like i can´t hear a full song until 28th by any way.
:( :( :(
Sometimes it´s just backwards or kind of, The CURE has many songs that sounds better live than studio, when the usual thing is the quality of sound of the studio albums of the most of the bands is far superior than their live performances.
Maybe this means that The CURE is one of the few band capable to do that ?
Or what ??
2 questions:
UTS final track is the same as the song played on French radio ?
Why RSx seems to be in love with high pitched vocal effects ?
The one song I was really looking forward to when the album came out. Overproduced vocals and shitty effects on Porl's end have left me feeling a bit ill tonight. Thank goodness we have a live version to listen to.
No really... I tried to get used to it but it's just horrible. What a disappointment. :( At least I'll get to see Cranes Live in a week. Ali's voice is always beautiful...
Well, I was never that taken with this song. My favorite new songs from Rome are The Reasons Why and The Real Snow White (which have some of the best lyrics RS has written in years -- thanks Craig). Porl's part sounded great, but otherwise The Hungry Ghost never seemed that interesting to me. There's a lot of just listening to the rhythm guitar, which doesn't have a lot to it, and lyrically it just isn't very convincing to me. It feels very much like one of RS's "topical" songs, rather than something heart felt.
Anyway yeah, the production here doesn't help. This kind of singing is great in something like Freakshow, but the tone seems totally wrong for a song like this. It's like he's trying to annoy the neighbors.
thx for the link....i must say RS vocal is perfectly fine. probably they can use a little slash of compression over the whole thing....cant wait to hear THNWY....
What's with all the fucking whining? It's a great song. Perhaps some of the emotion is lost in the studio mix.....but give it a chance to grow.......anyway, the emotional album is yet to come, I hope.......I wasn't expecting any great songs on this one so I'm still very happy with what I'm hearing!
IMO the studio version is MUCH better than the very weak live version. the vocals are definitely mixed too dry and up-front, which RS seems to favor lately. but it certainly doesn't suit this song. it's a pretty good song. not one of my favorites to begin with, but i like it.
No one mentioned that in the live version Robert says "all the things we know we never need" and on this studio version he says "all the things we never know we need".
I was annoyed at being asked to sign up, so I signed up as Stupid Signups. It's hilarious, because when I logged in, it said "Hello Stupid." :^D I think I might just make a proper account... it might eventually start to hurt my feelings, lol.
I love that The Hungry Ghost has a different sound to it... I like RS's vocals. I think it fits the song. I love the live version, but I don't see how this version could ever be construed as "ruined." Come on now, it's an awesome song!
I can not hear over 30 seconds of the song. Damage ....... I must say that the hungry ghost is one of my favorite songs on the Live in Rome. A bit disappointing it appears on the studio version I can not estimate with 30 seconds
Well there is no a big different between the studio version and the live version. The only thing is changed is the way Smith sings during the chorus. In the studio version he decided to make this part more accessible..maybe too much. It's not a problem of "effects" or sound..it's a melody choice that maybe was not too clever. The song was already "poppy" enough..
stop blaming the "production" or "mixing" for why the studio version is lacking. It's Robert's choice to sing in a higher octave than the live version, giving it a much poppier (blah) sound. If anyone should be to blame for neutering one of the best new songs, it's him.
It's different to be sure, but not ruined, just different IMO. I like both versions. I think the vocals sound fine. I agree with Alex that the vocals are mixed more up front. I think most fans like it more when Robert's voice is a bit more washed out in the music. This is still a great song. And I'm sure it's not too long until we get an official live CD or DVD of the album's material.
HG reminds me of the first time I heard Homesick. I listened to the Entreat version first and fell madly in love with that version. When I heard the album version the voice had a different effect. Needless to say, it took me some time to get over the difference. Today, I love them both.
Yeah, Ben, not sure myself now. I thought the guitars had a different, more "chorusy" effect. May just be imagining things through streaming, cheap headphones and even cheaper laptop!
ok. after multiple listens i can officially say i love this song and the mix. seriously. it's like i needed to listen to this one just as much as i did the live version, which was alot. i may have to be like that for all the songs, it's worth it.
I wrote a big rant just like a lot of you guys have done about the mix and the vocals, but after a few listens I'm getting used to it and it's really not so bad.
just re-listened, and although i dislike some of robert's vocal ticks and the range he sings in, the song has an undeniable kick. the guitar is pretty amazing, and i dig the lyrics. good song.
OK the chorus is a bit fucked up with that echoy effect but still I love the song. The live version does sound better but still this song Rocks!
That's the big problem listening to it live before hearing the studio version. You get used to it one way and when you hear the way it's on the album, you get disappointed. That's why I stopped listening to all live versions until I get the album!
Right now this is my favorite song but that could change once I've heard the rest of the album next Tuesday! Seven more days to go!!!
Weird how everyone goes on about the vocal effects on this one song, when the effects on Switch, SWID etc. are far more overwrought. Weird. Do people just not like the sentiment of the song?
MY FAAVOORIIIITTTEEEE!!!
ReplyDeleteonly song on the album that can make me cry, besides UTS of course
I'm crying as well but for different reasons. How can they fuck up the chorus that kinda way??? Everything's perfect... the music, the sound, Porl, but Robert's singing here is aweful... hope the rest of the song is better than this.
ReplyDeleteRest of the song? The whole song is up there, not just a clip.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me so happy. What a great year for music.
ReplyDeletei like the live version ALOT better :(
ReplyDeletethe mixing makes me cry. it doesnt sound ethereal like i was expecting.. in fact, the effects ANNOY me.

For me there's just a 30 seconds sample... not the entire song.
ReplyDeleteDJ: I was so disappointed with the album version. I've grown used to it now, but I'll always prefer the live version.
ReplyDeleteMY FAVORITE SONG IS RUINED..
ReplyDelete*screams of pain, whimpering, rocking back and forth, tears streaming*
on another note.. its clear to see Porls art is influenced by Van Gogh, and theres a quote of his!
roberts vocals are irritating me.. *wails hysterically*
huh?
ReplyDeletethe whole 4:29 of it is on there!!
i am just so.. so.. im out of words for this.
good songs are being ruined by production and mixing. i hate the way hes singing here.
and it sounded so goood in Rome.
lol
ReplyDeleteI knew this would happen from people listening to the whole album live before it actually comes out.
I'm glad I'm from a rare breed that usually prefers studio version to live version... for all artists.
Huh? If I click to the link above I come to a site where I can listen to three 30 seconds samples of The Perfect Boy, The Only One & The Hungry Ghost. 30 seconds samples not more... it's start with the "swallow down as the hunger grows" part for me?????
ReplyDeleteAre you registered? Sign in and they should all be full length.
ReplyDeleteI can only get 30 seconds and all the songs too. I only just registered just now to be able to listen to the tracks though.
ReplyDeleteAww. I was hoping to watch SNL tonite. Thanks a lot, DJ.
ReplyDeleteI registered but it's still just the 30 seconds samples for me... strange.
ReplyDeleteDJ: *hugs* :(.
ReplyDeleteMoontear: Are you in the Uk/Europe?
ReplyDeleteEurope yes...
ReplyDelete*tries to revive hynreck but fails.* aww shit.
ReplyDeletedo you want the monocles on, or in your hand when we bury you? and if the hand, please specify which one.
beau!! *running hug*
*trips on hynrecks dead body*
Hmmm, just wondering because I think you and me are the only ones who are getting 30 secs clips...and we're both in europe.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why people like this song so much. ReplyDeleteI would like 2 monocles on my close lids so I can pay the ferryman on the river Styx.
ReplyDeleteDJ: *hugs back* What are your other favourite songs from the live show?
ReplyDeleteI gotta say, I like it. The song didn't strike me as anything interesting during the live show, but I dig the little bit I listened to on this site.
ReplyDelete*places deux monocles on eyes*
ReplyDelete*stuffs body inside a tea crate*
here likes hynreckandjoe. the last of his kind.
yay, now we can have a funeral party!

ReplyDelete*hugs beau tighter*
ReplyDeleteim reassured by those words :)
In Mexico we also get only 30 seconds...
ReplyDelete:(

Why RSx seems to be in love with high pitched vocal effects ?
ReplyDeleteROFLMAOO. i feel the same way mad bob :)
and save for that plastic!
I really like it.
ReplyDeleteI never really got attached to the Rome version so I don't feel your pain, dj scribbles :)
The one song I was really looking forward to when the album came out. Overproduced vocals and shitty effects on Porl's end have left me feeling a bit ill tonight. Thank goodness we have a live version to listen to.

ReplyDelete: )
craig - how did you get the album? friend of COF? Phantom? Or did you e-mail askrobert@interscope.com
ReplyDelete"can i have the cd early?"
I was annoyed at being asked to sign up, so I signed up as Stupid Signups. It's hilarious, because when I logged in, it said "Hello Stupid." :^D I think I might just make a proper account... it might eventually start to hurt my feelings, lol.

'The Cure' was a live album essentially...
ReplyDeleteUTS is poor quality. No more album track mp3s.
ReplyDelete*shakes fist at the "god" who runs the site*
ReplyDeleteAnd if I don't delete them, TMU will.
ReplyDeletefine....
ReplyDelete:(
mr. i have the album and all
*kicks the dirt on the floor*
i understand, im just too excited. won't happen again..
ReplyDeleteand yeah, i remember the whole ordeal you had on the old Audio/Video download page on the old COF.
I can not hear over 30 seconds of the song.
ReplyDeleteDamage .......
I must say that the hungry ghost is one of my favorite songs on the Live in Rome.
A bit disappointing it appears on the studio version
I can not estimate with 30 seconds
I'm not listenin to jack shit.....until the 24th!!! ...then its open season..
ReplyDeleteFrom the reviews i'm reading, looks like THG could be the ultimate Cure masterpiece since WT.
WHY CANT I HEAER MORE THAN 30 SECONDS!
ReplyDeleteI am happily waiting for the album to listen...
ReplyDeleteFrom reading the previous comments, I believe that you have to log in to listen to the entire recordings, rather than the 30-second clips.

ReplyDeleteI love the live version, but this version's tweeks will have to grow on me. The song's fundamental things that made it great to me are still there.
ReplyDelete"Here lie the mortal remains of Heinreckandjoe. Monocled Canadian Cure pundit. Tragically taken from us by DJ Scribbles in a fit of twin pique."
ReplyDeleteI only got 30 second. Loved it, though. The vocal effects are a little OTT, but not terrible (IMO).
Did anyone think that TPB sounds different? (guitar effects in particular) I assume it's not "mix 13" then?
It's different to be sure, but not ruined, just different IMO. I like both versions. I think the vocals sound fine. I agree with Alex that the vocals are mixed more up front. ReplyDeletesounds terrible. the rome version is much better. the passion is gone from this, just like SWID from live to single version...
ReplyDeletesurely two versions are better than one anyway?
ReplyDeletejust enjoy the one you like and ignore the other .easy. no drama.
I just listened to that, pjw. It sounds like theres more keyboard in the build up to the chorus, it could be in my head. Sounds alot like the single.
ReplyDeleteHG reminds me of the first time I heard Homesick. I listened to the Entreat version first and fell madly in love with that version. When I heard the album version the voice had a different effect. Needless to say, it took me some time to get over the difference. Today, I love them both.

ReplyDeleteGreat, great song.
hey, my crack habit has nothing to do with my dislike of this song.
ReplyDeleteok, i've run out of crack.
ReplyDeletejust re-listened, and although i dislike some of robert's vocal ticks and the range he sings in, the song has an undeniable kick. the guitar is pretty amazing, and i dig the lyrics. good song.
sounds great for me, love it.
ReplyDeletehells yeah
ReplyDeleteLAWWWWL PJ AND MAREE!
ReplyDeletei put crack in my shampoo, helps volumize. therefore i bitch. :)
