Please Project now The Only One?

During the show in Antwerpen tonight, Robert introduced Please Project with "I think this is called The Only One."

  1. So this new, still untitled album, is supposed to be out in less than two months and we're still changing the names of the songs about?

If the new album actually does come out on May 6th, I will be absolutely shocked.

  2. One of these days...One of these days the song "M" will not be followed by the song "Play for Today" on a Cure concert setlist.

Thats when you'll know Armageddon Day has arrived.

  3. Watch the interview posted on Feb. 29th. At that time they still didn't know if they would make it a single or a double album. Still hadn't decided on the track list.

Remember, they HAD to postpone the US tour so that they could wrap it up and finish the new album. No way it gets pushed back until after the US tour, right? That would be ridiculous, right?
But as Robert said, "It will be finished when it's finished".

Can you imagine if they can't get it sorted during the April break?

And in fairness, the May 5th/6th date was never officially announced by the band. That's just a date that Universal has listed. Maybe nothing more than a wish and a prayer on their part.

  4. I Hopè this is a hint to let us now that this is "the only one" song out of all three new songs that will be included in the album, since robert has noticed these songs are really awfull!!

  5. Well if only one of these makes it, I hope it isn't Please Project/The Only One. I HATE this song. I haven't felt this way about a Cure song since, well, Never from the last album. And you just know they'll make this the damn single. : )

  6. A Boy I Never Knew is anything but really awful.

  7. Well if the new album doesn't come out before the US tour, then Robert's credibility is totally shot.

And before I started getting scotch bottles thrown at me...I'm not saying that I think I'm entitled to a new album. Frankly, I'm not that excited about the new album given the current line-up in the band and a couple of the new songs I've heard.

And its not because I think Robert should be rushed or because I'm trying to stifle his "artistic genius".

But its simply because he made such a big deal...And took such pains to announce that postponing the Fall tour last year had nothing to do with anything except finishing the new album. I mean, finishing the new album was so important to them that they had to pull the plug on a tour three weeks before it was supposed to happen.

And if they turn around and tour without a new album. Then, you have to admit, Robert is just full of it.

Maybe this is all moot and Robert will shock the world and release this awe-inspiring 26-song double album in the next two months.

Or maybe there's a much more virulent strain of writer's block in the world. I think I saw that on "House"

  8. I don't know why, but Simon seemed very pissed at the end of the show yesterday in Antwerp, the way he threw his bass guitar away and the signs he made towards the audience seemed far from friendly.Trouble in the household or just a bad day?

    ReplyDelete
  9. It seems like his bass didn't work anymore on the last song... You could only hear the "umpah-umpah" of the bass drum, but no bass part. I saw him leave rather angry too, but i didn't see him making angry signs at the audience though...

    The concert totally rocked, b.t.w.

  10. Please Project was a terrible name, I'm glad they changed it :) It doesn't make this song better, though. And I highly doubt that the album will be out BEFORE American leg of the tour :(

  11. I'm afraid for the new album now i've heard 3 songs from it... if this is it, then i hope they will postpone the album untill they've written GOOD songs. just my humble opinion ;-)

  12. Wow, I feel really guilty saying this, but I actually really like all the new material I've heard so far and I'll be first in line when the new album comes out. However, there is simply no way that the new album will be coming out in May. Robert has a very clear pattern when it comes to release dates. Whenever a new album is announced, it's a good 4 years or so before we see it. I'm betting any day now we'll be told that the album will be a "fall release".

  13. I think this is going to be the beginning of 6 year periods between record releases.

  14. Since Wish it's been 4 years between (new) albums, damn. I miss the old days when bands put out new material on a semi-annual basis.

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987)

    Disintegration (1989)

    Wish (1992)

    Wild Mood Swings (1996)

    Bloodflowers (2000)

    The Cure (2004)

    New Album (200?)

  15. even the way the new songs are performed vary from show to show. I am in the camp that see little to no chance this thing comes out before the US tour. In fact Im saving money for the 2nd tour, because there almost has to be one at this point. It may be short and in smaller venues, but they have to do it to appease the record company. Face it, this turned into a really long festivals tour which is fine, but its not a new album tour. And they best part is the pro film a show before the new record comes out that is supposed to be the film for the new album tour (with 11 minutes of new songs on it). I love the band still, but they are a mess

  16. As long as the album comes out before October it'll be out in a shorter time span than what seperated Bloodflowers and The Cure.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i'll admit i don't give a damn if the new album comes out first.

sure, it'd be nice to get acquainted with the new songs before hearing them live, but i stopped caring about that after the swing tour. WMS was the last cure album i really devoured front to back endlessly before i saw them on tour. sadly, it was actually the last halfway decent album.

bloodflowers tried but failed, and the less said about the self-titled one, the better. i'm doubting there's going to be a huge resurrection of songwriting quality from robert, though the music, with porl back, will probably be a bit deeper.

anyway, i rambled all that just to say: i don't care if the new album comes out before may 31, which is the show i'm seeing.

  18. Please Project has also been introduced as 'Love Love Love' on various occasions.

The latest date mentioned for the album release is June 2nd (very recently but still tentatively).

    ReplyDelete
  19. Um, so those who have been to the recent shows, how do they play "Plainsong" and "Prayers for Rain" WITHOUT KEYBOARDS??

    ReplyDelete
  20. They play them pretty darned good...

    ReplyDelete
  21. as long as they don't play anything from the last 12 years i don't care what they play. seems like all thr setlists are xerox copies anyhow. if they played '2 late' i could forgive smith for all his flakiness (and those hideous platform graver boots he's been wearing lately).

porl just might be the missing link
for this album. even though he now looks like the singer for dimmu borgir all the albums he's been on have been incredible. so i'm still holding out for something amazing...

  22. I fear Cure fans are far too cynical for their own good. It's your favourite band, man. Lay back and enjoy! And if there are a few songs/albums that you don't like, just skip them and listen to what you like. I, for my part, always have a get-beer-break when they play US or Them but I don't see a point in ranting about how bad the song is. Other people like it. Their choice.

Same with the release dates. Before I give myself a hard time, I'd rather listen to the albums that are out and look forward to the next one. There's always good stuff on every album, and the shows at the moment are really good. To hell with them playing the same order again and again. It's good songs! I'd rather listen 50 times to At Night, M, Play for Today and A Forest than once to some crap I really can't stand (and that wouldn't be by The Cure). These songs are brillant! Why complain?

  23. Great atmosphere in Antwerp yesterday. I don't think it's a good strategy playing the new songs in an arena.
Such songs are only for the die-hard fans and in all honesty the new songs ARE REALLY GOOD. The stickyness factor is high which was something I have missed in the last three albums. (I don't know what's going on was spot on though)

  24. I'm with you, Marie. I think every album over the past 12 years or so has contained a few Cure "classics". I hope Smith keeps making music for the rest of his life. My frustration about the new album stems from really digging the new cuts they've been playing live. I'll be seeing them in Boston in May and I can't wait!!!

  25. Really dumb question, why is this current tour called 4Tour?

    ReplyDelete
  26. 4Tour = tour with four members (plus tapes) and a pun at the same time, I suppose...

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree. I couldn't care less about the new album. I bought my tickets to the fall 2007 concerts knowing full well that there wouldn't be a new album associated with it.

What irritates me is that they canceled the tour 3 weeks before it was to start. I was furious at the time and Robert Smith said something like, "Don't worry about it. This is the for the best. Because we need to finish the new album. And then next year's tour will be better than ever".

But if they're just touring with some admittedly awesome songs from their glroy days, some of the dreadful 2004 songs, and three new songs. Well, they could have easily done that last year.

Because its looking like the extra time hasn't been helping.

  28. "I'm afraid for the new album now i've heard 3 songs from it... if this is it, then i hope they will postpone the album until they've written GOOD songs"

    I couldn't agree more.
A Boy I Never Knew is decent, although nothing special, but the other two would be just barely good as B-sides. Well, Freak Show not even that, actually, in my opinion.
That song is embarassing. Sounds like the bad copy of A Man Inside My Mouth...

I can barely play guitar, but seriously, I've written so much better stuff.

Their concerts are still worth though, because the old material is amazing and also because they're one of the few bands that play for over 3 hours. Then, of course the songs tend to be the same over and over... I guess they can't rehearse more than 50 songs for a tour, can they?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree with Marie and JPX, I am looking forward to the new album whenever it arrives. I can also agree that people who reguarly get to see them must get annoyed seeing the same sets, but hey if thats how you really feel, stop attending the shows. There is a real feeling of cynicism on this page, whipped into a frenzy by ringmaster Craig....chill out and stop second guessing and criticising everything....enjoy the good parts and edit out the bad....it's only music after all.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well, I cant help but to love Please Project. Feels very Kiss me Kiss me Kiss me to me. And Boy I never knew... I dont know but I think people have grown accustomed to criticising the band lately. OK. Robert did some shite things, like kicking Roger and Perry out, but well, life goes on. These two cure songs are ... well Cure songs... They are unlike the last album and if there is anything on the last album that would remind them, it´s before 3, which in my opinion is simply brilliant, despite the self named album is shite overall...

    ReplyDelete
  31. my god, if they played '2 late' live i might explode with joy. honest. it's playing on my stereo right now. this may very well be my favorite cure song. and that's saying a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  32. well, please project and freakshow names are official now since they splashed it all over the mtv broadcast of valenica, unless they want to look even sillier

    ReplyDelete
  33. Why would they play a fantastic B-Side like "2 Late" when they have annoying "A-Side" songs like "The End of the World" and "alt-end" over and over and over.

Sometimes, when I remember that those two songs were chosen as SINGLES for the 2004 album...You know, the songs Robert chooses to put on the radio in hopes of attracting more listeners to the band...It still gives me the heebie-jeebies.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thats generally the point of choosing singles..to generate plays and interest in the band.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh and how will they look silly if they change the names of songs?

    silly in whose eyes exactly?

Just because they are using these titles doesnt mean they are set in stone, as artists developing a work they are free to do what they want and to mould and change things prior to an actual release....

god some of the moronic criticisms on this site are mind boggeling

  36. I actually liked "Please Project"/"The Only One"/"Love Love Love"/(whatever it's called :)) the two times I have heard it live (and that's live as in "in person", not live as in a crappy recording on YouTube). It's catchy and I found myself singing it after the show. I get the feeling that the lyrics may still be a "work in progress" of sorts, but that's fine by me. While everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, of course, I would keep an open mind if you have yet to hear it for yourself. :)

  37. I'm with you, V, I'm really digging Please Project. It sounds like it could've come from the Wish sessions. In fact, it sounds a lot like one of the Lost Wishes instrumentals if I'm not mistaken.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think it is now firmly called "The only one".Announcing the song at Wembley last thursday,RS said something like.."Please project/The only one?" and after a few seconds pause he said "The only one", indicating, i felt, that this was the definitive name of the song..I could be wrong though..
