The Cure play Bestival on September 10th

The Cure will headline Bestival 2016 on September 10th. Tickets are on sale now.

"Saturday night headliners and one of my favourite bands ever, The Cure, played Bestival five years ago and almost had to be dragged off stage after a three-hour mammoth greatest hits set. Robert Smith popped down last year and we shook hands on it all happening again… bring it on!

The Cure's Robert Smith said: "We are very very happy to be back at our favourite festival; we can't wait to play a special set to show the future IS what it used to be…"

One of Bestival HQs favourites and, frankly, one of the greatest bands of all time, The Cure will headline Saturday night when Bestival heads to The Future. From Three Imaginary Boys in 1979 to their most recent album 4:13 Dream, they've forged their own path, dragging everyone else in their wake. Covering the gamut of emotions that take in the heady pop of Boys Don't Cry and Inbetween Days, the heartbreak of Pictures of You and Bloodflowers, the ferociousness of Give Me It and Fascination Street and the dreaminess of Underneath the Stars and Lovesong, their live shows are legendary, taking the crowd on a beautiful rollercoaster ride. So, we really can't wait to welcome them back to the main stage at Robin Hill this September."

So does this lend more credibility to the Toronto show being at Bestival Toronto? A package deal? Or less? Bestival not wanting to have the same headliner at both events? Either way, I hope we get some news about Toronto soon.

  2. I saw a Twitter post saying Ride was playing before The Cure on Saturday night. It's as if the promise of Ride opening for the U.S. Wish Tour is finally coming true!

  3. I thought this might happen as Robert has gone on record as saying their 2011 Bestival set wasn't a very good performance...think he wants to put that right...

    1. Geez, has it been that long already?

The Cure were right in the middle of a transitional phase then. Bestival 2011 was book-ended by the Reflections shows, which were lush and sounded beautifully, but on that festival they played without a second guitarist and with the not-quite-there-yet Schecter guitars, which didn't help their performance.

Still, it was a good glimpse of things to come, and they were right back on form in 2012.

    2. I love the Bestival live recording - Robert sang his heart out that night.

    3. I was there and it was a great show. The ( very young ) audience went nuts for them. The audience at Reading the following year didn't seem half as enthusiastic.

    4. That Reading show wasn't a great one to be at, no atmosphere.

  4. Bestival Toronto is listed as June 11 and 12, and the Cure are playing Chicago those nights

    1. No official dates have been announced yet. Those dates are based on last year, when it was a 2 day fest on Friday and Saturday. The thinking is that they might be going to 3 days or a Saturday and Sunday.

No one knows for sure, all just spec. But something is holding up the Toronto announcement.

    2. Hope it's not Bestival. I'd rather have a stand alone show since I'm planning on Toronto and Montreal

    3. Toronto no longer shows up on the 'events' page on their website. I fear that the Toronto show isn't going to happen... :(

    4. It wouldn't be listed on the Events page, since it hasn't been announced yet.

  6. Toronto show is probably going to coincide with Luminato, a local arts/culture festival that takes over venues across the city for a couple weeks. In the past shows would be free but this one will cost $$$. The Cure's TO date coincides with the opening weekend of the festival, and they have to wait until the organizers are ready to drop details. That said, I EFFING WISH it was Bestival Toronto they were playing instead and fingers crossed hardcore it is... but it's also a much smaller scale fest here than in the UK so we'll see.

    1. I highly doubt the TO show will have anything to do with Luminato.
I still belive that they will headline Bestival TO along with Tame Imala.

  7. "...We can't wait to play a special set to show the future IS what it used to be…" This seems like a special hint of what to expect for the new tour, but what does it mean???

    1. Some kind of retro-space age theme? Vague reference to optimism or nihilism? Maddeningly ambiguous.

  8. Most likely a reference to the theme of the festival, which changes every year. Of course, there may be more to it than that.

  9. Yeah, that line grabbed me, too...
