Excel Gum ripping off The Cure?

"Don't know if you've seen this as its a Canadian commercial which obviously rips off The Cure's Just Like Heaven and In Between Days..." (Thanks Lisa and Brad)

Update: This Italian commercial is even worse. Total ripoff of 'The Loudest Sound'. (Thanks Andrea B.)

  1. Total ripoff. Pointed it out to my wife when I first heard it months ago.

  3. I've seen this several times and always think to tell you, but forget. They also ripped off the visual idea from Blur's "Coffee and TV".

Canadian advertizers are not only unfunny and irritating, but they have a long history of taking pop songs and changing the notes just enough not to pay royalties. I remember a car ad that used the bassline to Radiohead's "The National Anthem" in 2004.

I'm so ashamed of Canada for this crap.

  4. Thank you, Andrea B. Wow, that one is even worse. Blatant copy of The Loudest Sound.

  5. i'll give you the italian commercial, but the gum one? i mean, c'mon. there are only so many chord progessions in the universe. believe me, i would be outraged if it were blatant, but i don't think it's a COMPLETE rip. that other one though...

  6. Wow! How much does it cost to use a song for a commercial, anyway?

  8. The Italian one is way more obvious, but there are definitely some Cure chords in the gum commercial.

  9. this is common practise, not just for the cure...in oz, they constantly rip off known tunes, reverse the chord progressions, add some dum dee dums and voila...seem to get away with it...

  13. lindsey, it has the cure "sound" but i don't think it's a true rip-off at all. just a sound-alike.

  14. this is cure-inspired sound from "the cure mtv icon"

obviously this is not a case of copy
but it's quite simple to get some inspiration

  15. Yeah, it's common practice in ads of recording similar versions of songs yet with enough differences to avoid legal conflict instead of paying for the real thing

  16. My take: The gum commercial: Inspired by The Cure, but not IP theft. The Italian commercial: Robert should take them to court.
