Countdown to Sleep

The official site has added a countdown clock and brief clip of Sleep When I'm Dead.

  1. Interesting - the intro certainly does NOT sound as rocking as the live version. I am now intrigued to hear this one!

  2. Yes, I have been curious to hear the studio version of this track.

(What are you doing awake, Elise? :)

  4. Kate - work processes were running around in my head - figured I may as well get up and just bang out a couple of emails (to put my mind at rest).

Apparently, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead too :(

  5. all i heard was "sleep when i'm dead, you angels i'll sleep when i'm dead, you said" 40 times in a row which is, presumably, the bit before they shred our faces off.

ps: you (cure) are using too many typefaces and it's making my brain bleed. please correct.

  6. I will soon.... I promise - I'm just writing a fabulous email in relation to the automatic Service Order cancellation process - actually if anything is going to put me to sleep - it may be this email ;P

  8. I think CURE play over & over the voice intro because they want to surprises us.

In fact sounds not much rocker as the live versions we already know but i remember the last two samplers last almost a 1 min and this is shorter.

After the "But Until Then" starts to rocking the whole song, so i´m trusting the studio version will do the same.

    :)

  9. Mad Bob - Hi. I just think that the intro (which is set to repeat) sounds very 'different' from the live version, and I wonder how much of the live rock influence will feed through to the studio verion.

BTW - is that keyboards in the background or should I just go back to sleep?

  10. does anyone hear 2 tracks at the same time and have to pause it to only hear one?

i've been having that problem since the only one. is it universal's fault? or is my computer messed up?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi Elise, good to see you again
    :)

Yeah i think too there is some keyboard there.

The bad part of listening live versions tons of times all of the new songs is when we finally hear the studio versions almost for sure we think they´re very different and maybe we could think studio is losing power compared to the live one.

But, for me, i won´t regret at all listening the new tunes as as much as Cure freak.

It´s just we´re used to heard live versions but later when the new album comes out we´ll love the studio versions as well.

    :)

  12. Andy - what do you mean 'two tracks'? Do you mean like thay are being played at the same time (then my answer is no) do you mean that the intro keeps looping (then my answer is yes)

  13. MadBob - I am excited by the studio version, but it could end up being a surprised. o be honest, I was never a fan of Freakshow live but absolutely LOVE the studio version.

I guess this is why we find the band so cure-ious

  14. MB - I should be asleep, but work is keeping me awake :(
Aside from that, I'm peachy keen.

    How about you?

    ReplyDelete
  15. good. wondering how the studio version of SWID is going to sound and eating chicken and hummous. nice and mellow here in the office.

    ReplyDelete
  16. yeah, they're playing at the same time for me. both tracks.

    ReplyDelete
  17. MB - um, I couldn't possibly consider food at this time of night/morning

    ReplyDelete
  18. yes, understandable, elise, but i'm at 12:30! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well, it's 3.30AM here - I think I'm gonna try going back to sleep. Put work out of my mind for a while..... hopefully.

    Catchya!

    ReplyDelete
  20. sleep well...not when you're dead. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Shouldn't we sleep while we're alive? Because to me, sleeping is great!

  22. You know. I love The Cure. But am I the only one who thinks the countdown to the release of the new single is a tiny bit pretentious?

I mean, they're not launching the space shuttle or anything :)

But I'll forgive them if its a good song. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. i like the countdown, sort of adds to the (my) excitement for the new singles and album.

i just wish they'd put a little more effort into their site so it seemed like they cared more than just the minimum amount.

  24. Poor Clockwise has been taking a lashing on the official site, but some super sensitive people, Clockwise has commented as has monkeybutt about the lack of care on the site, lets just face the facts this is 'the' cure site....the official one can't ever compete with this one, and I only go there as a last resort really, besides the people that hang out there are really nasty....whats with the OB idiot, does he/she think that name is funny? thats whats truely offensive, not a misinterpreted comment by a kind hearted fan frustrated by record comp indifference....

    Save the Cat!

    : )

  25. The conversation on the official site makes me want to tear my eyes out. I will not be getting involved. Hell is other people. :^P

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ah... and I love the studio version of Sleep so far, and the timer is kind of fun.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm looking foward to hearing the full version. SWID has always been the wild card for me, not knowing if I like it or not. Then again I didn't hear it live....

    ReplyDelete
  28. alastair, are you owljoe??

in any event thanks for your kind words... but please, don't pity me! i'll be fine... LOL...

apparently i annoy several people... price I pay for being a net-dork, i spose.

or price i pay for being flamboyantly outspoken... especially before i have had my caffeine fix!

    you're too cute, alastair. :-)

  29. that said - freakshow still comes up for me on the official site. where is sleep when i'm dead?

    ReplyDelete
  30. maybe you need to clear out your cache. i mean, i know we just met and all, but...

    ...

  31. I agree it sounds different from the live version. I certainly found this to be the case with Freakshow, that while the live version was intriguing, the studio version just felt more complete. The production seems pretty good; each instrument has a well-chosen sound and there are keyboard touches and things like that.

This clip sounds very ghostly. I'm not sure how to characterize it, but the third time he sings "sleep when I'm dead" and the accompanying guitar line drops out, you hear a spooky bell-like synth sound. The texture is just different from what I heard on the live recordings, and it seems to complete the song.

It makes me really hopeful for The Perfect Boy, a song which is pretty fun, but from live versions seems like something is missing -- a lead guitar line or something. I now fully expect the studio version to answer that question. I think it's going to be a great single.

Before they were writing these really layered songs, with loads of guitar parts piled up and up. With the last album, they stripped it down, but they were just not that rocking as a band, and the production sucked. This time, the studio versions have a great polish and direction that doesn't detract from the immediacy of the "band" sound. Freakshow is all about that bass line and Porl's guitar snaking through it.

  32. It sounds great so far! It's in a higher key than they've been playing it live, and it sounds more exciting.

That's what's happened with all the singles so far for me--the studio version just feels more complete and exciting. I was completely nonplussed by The Only One live, but was glad to hear the studio version was much better (although it's still the weakest of the new songs IMO).

    ReplyDelete
  33. Just when it starts to kick in it stops, what a Cure-tease!

    ReplyDelete
  34. i think the repeat thing is just a fuck up coz freakshow was doing it too fr a while just before they changed it.. on my pc anyway

    ReplyDelete
  35. monkeybutt, i know this is a very personal question and all, but: how do i clean out my cache?

    ReplyDelete
  36. okay, i cleaned out my cache and it felt goooooood.

the studio version of sleep when i'm dead is going to take some real getting used to. on first listen, it's just a bit too weird sounding for me. i'm sure i'll adjust with time. i do like the live versions of it a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I totally agree with you, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  38. ywah I hope it ramps up a bit after that intro !!!
I still like freakshow best :P..

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm quite excited about this, hearing the production. Of the new songs I heard live, I liked this, Only One and Freakshow the best.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You can tell it cuts off the moment the bass is about to kick in. This song will be awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  41. not a big fan of SWID, it doesnt sound 80s to me at all (im surprised it comes from the HOTD era) ..but its still a good song.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thank God the new Cure album is coming out. I need something to get me motivated. Now that I finished this huge paper, I feel empty. I've got a hole that only Robert and company can fill................................................................................in my heart...........................................................................with their music, of course! (Don't think such dirty thoughts!)

    ReplyDelete
  43. That's supposed to read "with their music". It's hard to joke on a blog; now I've overemphasized what's not that funny. :(

    ReplyDelete
  44. i agree - i just listened to the "sampler" of swid - and its so different from the raw and crazy live version. wow.

if i heard the studio version first - would i have not liked it live...???

    weird.

  45. "jesus CHRIST i cant believe how stupid ppl are on the "other" site!!! "
That's exactly why I seldom read those comments anymore... :/

    ReplyDelete
  46. jesus CHRIST i like pie! it's sooooooooo tasty!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't visit the comments section on the 'other site' anymore. They all seem so miserable - I love the hearts and flowers world of COF!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I finally heard the sample of SWID during lunch break. That's a very short clip and really can't tell much from it yet, except that it does sound a bit weird... especially when you listen to it on repeat. But I believe the single will kick ass :) Love the live version of the song.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hey Elise :)

"hearts and flowers world of COF" haha, so true. Unfortunately these days I'm way too busy to visit here as often as I did...(sigh)

    ReplyDelete
  50. I had the two songs playing at once problem too. I simply paused the player and one of them stopped and everything was fine(in case someone has that problem too). I started out thinking that was a really weird intro!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm surprised at people's reaction to the SLID sample. It stops right before the song really kicks in, which I'm sure is awesome. All we hear is the prelude. I"m sure it's a rocker.

    ReplyDelete
  52. the higher vocals are a bit jolting to hear after hearing them sung in a lower register live. i'm sure i'll get used to it, but for now it sounds awkward. need to hear the rest of the song dammit!

  55. Although I loved the song once it got going live, I didn't really like the intro much. I think it's going to be the same with the studio version: The intro is strange but, just as the song cuts off on the teaser, sounds like it's about to really kick off!

I agree about the official site. The comments are often rude, ignorant and nonsensical. I've only posted here a few times, but it all seems much friendlier!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Well the studio version sounds quite interesting so far, almost eerie but what a tease. I cannot wait to hear the full version soon. Ten more days to go!!! I expect after the intro the band will kick into full gear & it will be one rocking song. The live versions are great & I know I'll love the studio version too.

And I usually go over to the official just to read the comments but I never post. Too many negative and some truly weird ppl on there!!! And I agree with all of what Cat said too! She's one tough kitty!!!

You sum it up for me, there, Alex. My thoughts exactly.

  58. This was my favorite of the new songs until UTS came along. I do love them all though.

Whenever Robert said they were gonna play this song, I was the one person that screamed really loud! Love, love, love it!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ah, the tease! This is my favourite new song (yes, even more than UTS), and this sounds great to me.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think this new version is going to be great... I like the live version, but I am really liking the studio intro... all that reverb on his voice is cool and makes it haunting!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hi everyone, anyone has an effort to descipher SWID & BRDB lyrics.

The people on non-native speaking countries will be very happy.

I know it´s only 9 days left to have the official for SWID but i can´t stand anymore.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

  62. Mad Bob: Yes, I did the lyrics for the live version of Sleep, based on the Fuse broadcast. I'll post them in a little while.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Definately my favourite single so far. The keyboard sounding effect on the live version (Porl??) is fantastic. The new stuff really feels like a return to form after the unfulfilled potential of the last album..
