BBC Radio 6 interview with Robert

Highlights from The Irish Examiner:

The Cure’s Robert Smith has said it would be “counter productive” to play the band’s “slow and gloomy” new music during their headline set at Glastonbury.

The English rock band will headline the Pyramid stage on Sunday night but will stick to older material, the frontman has promised.

He told Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music: “We ran through some of the new songs but it’s really, really slow and gloomy, the new album, and we just did it in rehearsal on the first day and everyone was looking at each other and I knew what they were thinking but no-one wanted to say it.

“There is no way, it just wouldn’t fit.

“Later in the year we are going to be playing our own shows and we will be playing new album songs in that show.

“I honestly think it would be a very counter productive move to walk out on stage and play 10 minutes of slow dirge in front of a summer festival crowd.

“I don’t think anyone would appreciate it.”

The group first played at Glastonbury in 1986 and this will be their fourth headlining slot.

Smith said: “The biggest change in me over the last 20 years of performing is that 20 years ago I really didn’t care what the audience did or didn’t get into, it was entirely selfish.

“The performance was all about what I wanted to do and how the band was, whereas now I’m much more aware we are playing for people and I understand now that if they are into it, it makes the show even better.

“You get more into it, they get more into it. It’s a great feedback loop.

“The show is now a much more powerful show than certainly the last time we played Glastonbury, it’s a much better band.”

Nowhere in here does he apologize. Not that anyone is asking for one, and I'm sure Robert hasn't lost a second of sleep troubled by this. Anyway, read this nonsense here.

Awaydays: How we made the best soundtrack in football film history – with no money


"When it got to the scary business end of our delivery schedule, we had a finished cut of the film that featured Joy Division, The Cure and Magazine in key scenes. Having tried numerous tracks and different ‘takes’ and assemblies of these big, evocative moments – The Pack coming around the corner for Carty’s first big away day; the bizarre love triangle between Molly, Elvis and Carty; and Elvis getting jealous in Eric’s – we couldn’t imagine life without the tracks we’d settled upon: The Light Pours Out Of Me by Magazine, Joy Division’s Insight and the heartbroken, stripped-down very early four-track demo of The Cure’s 10.15, Saturday Night.

With The Cure, it was pretty simple. Their music publisher told us we would have to secure written permission from Robert Smith. The only problem was that the band was on a world tour and there was no saying when he might receive the letter, if at all. They suggested writing one letter c/o The Cure’s manager, who would be likely to fly out and join the tour at some point – but to send another (not a copy – the publisher emphasised that Robert Smith was a fan of a personal letter) to him (the publisher), who would forward it to Bobby’s home address. So I did – I wrote him a letter about how I’d seen him play at Eric’s for £1 on a Thursday night in 1979 and walked home, getting a lift from the milkman for the final mile. It was completely true – but it didn’t work. I didn’t hear back.

Until, long after we’d given up hope, a hand-written letter arrived from the man himself. He said he hoped we didn’t think he was being rude in not replying sooner. He’d just got back off a gruelling six-month tour (after which he’d taken a month’s holiday). He said he’d be more than happy to give his permission for us to use the track in a sensitive, non-violent context – so long as we donated £500 to Greenpeace. And he remembered the Eric’s gig with great affection. We were on."

London, UK, 29 May: Trafalgar Releasing, in collaboration with Eagle Rock Entertainment, today announced the global cinema release of The Cure – Anniversary 1978-2018 Live in Hyde Park London, celebrating 40 years of The Cure, cementing them as one of the defining rock bands of music history.

The film, slated for release from Thursday 11 July, sees The Cure take the stage on a perfect July evening in London’s Hyde Park to deliver a set of a songs celebrating four decades of music making.

The ensuing film Anniversary 1978-2018 directed by long time collaborator Tim Pope, captures them in glorious 4K. The 5.1 audio mix by Robert Smith and Paul Corkett complements and completes this fabulously immersive cinematic experience.

From Lovesong to Lullaby, from Boy’s Don’t Cry to Burn, from Fascination Street to Friday I’m In Love, Robert Smith and his extraordinary band – Simon Gallup, Jason Cooper, Roger O’Donnell and Reeves Gabrels – take us on a magical trip through time.

The now seminal gig received widespread critical acclaim including five stars from The Independent, calling it “a perfect set”. Rolling Stone said there was a “unique power in The Cure’s live performance”, whilst NME called it “epic” and The Metro awarded four stars saying that the show was a “testament to how iconic The Cure’s music is that ticket-holders covered all generations”.

Lead singer of The Cure, Robert Smith says: “This really was the perfect way to celebrate 40 years of the band. It was a fabulous day none of us will ever forget.”

Marc Allenby, CEO at Trafalgar Releasing added: "The influence and impact of The Cure is unquestionable and last year's 40th anniversary concert captured the band at their very best, representing the breadth of their amazing career. It's a great honour for Trafalgar Releasing to be given the opportunity to work on this theatrical release and we look forwarding to sharing this special film with fans in cinemas around the world."

Director, Tim Pope says on the film: “Working alongside Robert for these 37 years of the band’s 40-year history - and also having previously filmed the band for the 35mm ‘In Orange’ 1986 concert film - I wanted cinema-goers to feel like they were in the thick of the action, in the heart of the music. Our film really captures the true power and passion of The Cure’s music for a global audience.”
