The Guitars of The Cure

"I encourage everyone to pop on a pair of headphones and listen to a few songs by The Cure – especially if you’ve never really paid close attention before. You’ll hear how a few simple melodic ideas can be blended together to form a much more complex whole. It’s really intriguing to listen to and learn from how each instrument works together, especially when the six-string bass is used: often Robert Smith might play a high melody while Simon Gallup plays a more traditional bassline, but sometimes these roles become cloudy: Gallup will play a more wandering melody while Robert plays something more anchored. The lines really become blurred between the roles of each instrument in service of the song. Robert Smith, Reeves Gabrels and Simon Gallop all have current signature model instruments to help them get their sound. Let’s have a look at them all."

Noisey interviews Lol about 'Cured'

US cover. Artwork by Pearl Thompson

From Noisey: Laurence ‘Lol’ Tolhurst met Robert Smith at the age of five. Years later, he’d become a founding member (and the original drummer) of The Cure. Cured: The Tale of Two Imaginary Boys, his first book, is an incredibly candid and personal memoir that looks back at his childhood friendship with Robert Smith, as well as his time in The Cure until, in 1989, he left during the recording of eighth album, Disintegration, due to his struggle with drugs and alchohol. Below is a world-exclusive first extract from the book–detailing the band’s first ever time in the USA–as well as a conversation with Tolhurst about the art and intention of writing it, the nature of memory, and the enduring power of his friendship with Smith and the rest of the band in the face of trying times and acrimonious lawsuits.

Read the interview and extract at Noisey. Cured: The Tale of Two Imaginary Boys is out in the US on Oct. 11th, 2016.  Pre-order here.

Help with upcoming shows?

If you're going to any of the upcoming shows in Australia, and wouldn't mind helping me with the setlist reports, please let me know.

Still looking for help from Splendour. Is anyone going? Can anyone help out?

Splendour in the Grass exit troubles

Just a heads up for those heading to Splendour, it sounds like a total nightmare trying to get out of there after the show. 3 hour + bus wait, people resorting to walking home on dark roadways, etc. Read the comments on the Facebook post here and here.

The AU picks their favorite Cure videos

"The Cure are set to deliver some of their largest sets ever seen by Australian fans, kicking off with their appearance at Splendour in the Grass this weekend. The set lists have proven to be extensive, with recent shows on the band’s world tour extending out to four encores, with the song count exceeding 30.

With such a large and beloved back catalogue of music behind them, these gigs are set to be a treat for any Cure fans on this side of the globe and we can’t wait to see how their upcoming headline shows roll out. While we twiddle our thumbs and wait for them to kick off however, we’ve jumped down a YouTube rabbit hole and have been revisiting some of our favourite videos from Robert Smith and co."

See their picks here. Note the criminal exclusion of the Charlotte Sometimes video! Seriously, I'm the only person who actually loves it. :)

Faster Louder ranks The Cure albums

13. Wild Mood Swings
12. 4:13 Dream
11. Wish
10. The Top
9. The Head on the Door
8. The Cure
7. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
6. Bloodflowers
5. Three Imaginary Boys
4. Seventeen Seconds
3. Faith
2. Pornography
1. Disintegration

Go complain and argue at Faster Louder. :)
