The Cure play Bestival on September 10th

The Cure will headline Bestival 2016 on September 10th. Tickets are on sale now.

'Just Like Heaven' cover, 1940s style

"We took a trip to the 1940s this week for another Postmodern Jukebox debut – this time, by a 20 year old vocalist named Natalie Angst.  Watch our vintage remake of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” here.

Despite her age, Natalie is an old soul, and is more familiar with recordings by Ella Fitzgerald than she is with modern-day pop.  She did have a favorite song by The Cure, though: “Just Like Heaven,” which, like a Glenn Miller record, has a strong, identifiable melody.  I worked out an arrangement to give the tune a 1940’s twist, and added Lemar Guillary on trombone and Jacob Scesney on sax to add in some Tex Beneke-Style solo work.

The Cure are an institution at this point. The goth pop-rockers have been going steady since 1976, releasing 13 albums and helping teenagers of multiple generations deal with their complex feelings. While some of their later work has not been as critically adored, their live performances have remained remarkably steady. Robert Smith’s voice remains a timeless bastion of heartache and longing, sweetly crooning over the band’s impeccable post-punk arrangements. It’s a time for old fans to rekindle their love for the band and for new fans to find that emotional release promised from their parents’ old copies of Disintegration. The Cure plays Sasquatch! on May 29th

One of those mornings where you wake up feeling good, looking forward to the day, then you check the news and your heart just breaks as you scream, "NO!". What an amazing man and an amazing life. The words Icon, Legend, Genius get thrown about too freely these days, but David Bowie was the true embodiment of those words. One of a kind artist, never to be seen again.

And I love that even while going through the awfulness that is Cancer, he still found the strength and grace to put together one last collection of songs, to give us all one final gift. Thank you so much, David! For this and everything else you gave us. Farewell, sir.

A new version of 'A Few Hours After This' played during tonight's episode of 'Luther'. Turns out 'Luther' creator Neal Cross is a huge Cure fan, and asked to use the song in the episode, and Robert recorded a new version for him.

Here's the story from The Daily Record:

"The return of Luther also gave Neil a teenage kick when his idol Robert Smith of The Cure provided a song for the soundtrack.

He said: “I have been an obsessive fan of The Cure since I was 13.

“After we had finished shooting the second episode of this special, I phoned the producer and said there is this really obscure Cure track – an extra track on a 12-inch single called A Few Hours After This – which I have always loved and think it would really go.

“Long story short, we contacted Robert Smith and he re-recorded the song. That was one of those moments where I wanted to hijack the Tardis and go back and see my teenage self and say, ‘One day…’" (Thanks @weareglitter)

Boise seems to be aware of The Cure

There was never any doubt that The Cure coming to Boise was a big deal. I knew fans would get excited.

Just not quite this excited. “BAAAABR. IM DYING,” commented a particularly pithy user on the Idaho Statesman’s Facebook page. It was among dozens of freakouts and hundreds of shares that piled up after I blogged about the June 2 concert coming to CenturyLink Arena.

Thousands and thousands of page views later, The Cure was Monday’s most-read article at IdahoStatesman.com. It was nearly twice as popular as the day’s second-place finisher.

At 9:15 a.m., 94.9 FM The River started spinning The Cure songs every 90 minutes. (The British band’s biggest hits are ’80s classics such as “Lovesong,” “Just Like Heaven” and “Friday I’m in Love.”) Program director Tim Johnstone posted Cure videos on his Facebook page.

“My friends are stunned,” Johnstone says. “Stunned.”

So why is it so earth-shattering? Maybe because The Cure has never performed here. At various points an influential part of goth, new wave, alternative rock and other labels eschewed by singer Robert Smith, the group doesn’t tour the United States often. Many Idahoans already had bought tickets for The Cure’s performance June 3 in Salt Lake City — a big deal unto itself.

A relatively miniscule 4,874 seats will be available at CenturyLink. Multiple-night-stands at huge venues in cities such as Los Angeles and New York have sold out in advance.

The public on-sale for Boise is at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18. But a presale 24 hours earlier sold more than half the arena already. That said, don’t fret: Plenty of great seats were held for the public on-sale.

“The excitement level — I knew it would be there,” says Creston Thornton, owner of Eagle promoter CTTouring. “But this is a monster.”

Luring The Cure to Idaho wasn’t easy. Thornton wrote emails that were forwarded to Smith in an effort to sell him on Boise. The process took a month, Thornton says. (Among the points he made: Downtown Boise is hipper than you think. And Depeche Mode, a British band that shares fans with The Cure, sold almost 8,000 tickets here in 1998. (And that was in Nampa, at the Idaho Center.)

The Cure’s sonic calling card is a gloomy yet accessible sound. It’s the sort of era-driven music that jettisons nostalgic Gen-X brains back through time, straight into college dorms, high-school hallways and middle-school cafeterias.

Thornton says he saw The Cure at 16,000-capacity Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre as a teenager in Orange County. It was 1986. Clearly, bringing The Cure to Boise means more to him than just making a buck as a promoter.

“People are fanatical about this band,” he says. “To see people this pumped, it’s really cool.”
