Phil Anselmo's love of The Cure

From Nola.com: Did you hear that the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience has added The Cure to the line-up?
Anselmo: I saw that. I’m a big fan, man. I love The Cure.

Do you really? I didn’t think you’d be as excited as everyone else seems to be.
Anselmo: I’m an older Cure fan. “Seventeen Seconds” (from 1980) and “Faith” (from 1981) are my two favorite Cure albums. Robert Smith is just a greater songwriter, period. It’s a beautiful addition to the Voodoo Fest. Big, big thumbs-up right there.

So if you’re in town the first weekend of November, you’ll be there?
Anselmo: I might be in town, I might not. I have a gig in South America. I wish I could tell you more about it. It’s kind of like the thing I do with the Metal Masters; it’s an all-star cast. But hopefully I’m home. Because I’d love to see The Cure.

When Robert met Trent in NOLA

The last time Robert Smith & Trent Reznor were together in New Orleans (Swing Tour show 1996, with Trent, Marilyn Manson, and Clint Mansell in attendance), well, things got a bit odd. The story from Alternative Press:

"Every city in America has at least one Gothic club. In New Orleans, it's the Blue Crystal. When a band like the Cure is in town, the Blue Crystal throws a party after the show. The club called Reznor, the closest thing they have to a local dignitary, to invite him to the Cure after-show party. Further conversation revealed that the only way the Cure would show is if Reznor is there, too. You can't hear it anywhere in Nine Inch Nails, but Reznor is a Cure fan from way back. He considers the Cure's The Head On The Door" one of the best records ever." His favorite description of himself: "Robert Smith with a head cold."

"I end up going to the club, and surprisingly, everyone from the Cure is there. And the bartender calls me over and says, 'Robert really wants to talk to you.'" Reznor smiles, makes a face that says: You mean I have to meet one of my teen idols in a goth club in Louisiana? Now? In front of all these people?

"It ends up," Reznor says, "me and him, hugging on the dance floor. He's like, 'I love you, dude,' and I'm like, 'I love you too, man.'" The Cure fans formed a loose circle around the pair while New Order's "Blue Monday" pumped out of the speakers. "It was the greatest scene," Reznor says.

"We were both fairly incoherent," he feels compelled to add."

So what will happen this time? Will the bromance continue? Do we even have a goth club now? I would have no idea. No, this time, since it will still be Halloween (sort of), Trent should take Robert to The House of Shock or The Mortuary. :)

TIB is 1 of Tom Robinson's favorite albums

"The great joy of The Cure is that Robert Smith manages to combine razor-sharp musicianship, first-rate song writing and that wonderful sense of the absurd and the anarchic and the fun."

Blame Canada!

From Reeves on Facebook: "great show in osheaga. no thanks to canadian customs inspectors who managed to destroy my main guitar by seemingly leaving it outdoors in a heavy rain storm with the case open during inspection."

Update from Reeves on Facebook: "this reverend jetstream hb guitar came thru at lollapalooza last night with flying gold sparkly colors as a last minute substitute for my main reverend rg2 guitar that canadian customs destroyed. boundless thanks to ken haas at reverend and matt k at chicago guitar exchange."

Simon Gallup is a Doctor Who fan!

Simon now has a "The angels have the phone box" sticker on his bass. He previously had one that said "Saving the world has never been so ginger". Both are Doctor Who references. As a lifelong Who fan, this thrills me to no end. :)
(Photo from Rocksubculture)

Update: He's also had a "Come Along Pond" sticker on his white bass, and also wrote that on his arm.
(Thanks Charlotte Sometimes)

Update (10/21/13): Yet another Doctor Who reference from Simon, and further proof of his awesomeness. See those sets of marks on his arm? He must have run into The Silence quite a few times in Austin! ;) Thanks to Rev. Heron for sending the photo, and to Fuji for taking it at Austin City Limits on Oct. 5th.

Update (03/31/14): And his latest Who sticker, A Good Man Goes To War, was displayed at the Royal Albert Hall shows on March 28th & 29th, 2014.  Thanks to Perfect.Murder for spotting it, and to Olivier at It's A Perfect Day for the photo.

Update (5/30/14): No change at the BottleRock show. Still has A Good Man Goes To War sticker.

This is really fun! Have there been any other DW stickers or markings that I've missed?

Live webcast of The Cure's set at Lollapalooza!

Lollapalooza will once again be offering live webcasts from the festival. No schedule has been released yet, and no guarantee they'll show The Cure. But let's all hope Robert gives permission to air their set. And maybe even more than the usual 1 hour rule? (Thanks @object29)

Update (07/30/13): Now confirmed. The Cure's set will be webcast. Sunday night at 9:15 PM eastern, 8:15 PM central, 7:15 PM mountain, 6:15 PM pacific.

Update (08/01/13): The newly updated webcast schedule gives us hope for a full Cure set, not just the typical hour. They now have The Cure at 8:15, and Phoenix at 10:15. They could add someone in the middle of that, but for now, it looks good.

Note: If you saw Friday night's Nine Inch Nails webcast, you know this has the potential to be the best Cure webcast ever. The video & audio were outstanding! So was NIN. A phenomenal performance!

Next Trilogy/Reflections shows in 2014?

So they don't get lost in the Honolulu Meet & Greet topic, I'm giving them their own.

From Nando: "Robert revealed that there were plans for a Reflections-like tour focusing on The Top, The Head on the Door, and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me!"

From Darrell: "As with others, when I busted out my Reflections limited Litho, Robert said they are working out the next Reflections/Trilogy type show for next year, with The Top, Head on the Door, and Kiss Me!"

Why is the King of Secrets & Obfuscation being so chatty about these shows? And should that make us believe in them more? Or less? :)
