The Cure cover Beatles' 'Hello Goodbye'


Judging by no Porl, Roger, or Reeves in the band, and by the stickers on Robert's guitar, this appears to have been recorded between 2009 - 2011. Guessing 2011 based on this first being reported by The Sun on April 11th, 2011. Articles here.

Also, according to The Art of McCartney website, Robert will do a solo cover of 'C Moon' by Wings. It will not be on the standard CD, only the Deluxe Set & Triple Vinyl Shoulder Pack. Press release says if you pre-order , you get a download now of 'Hello Goodbye'.

Update (09/10/14): The track is now available to download (at Amazon, iTunes, etc.), either on its own or with a pre-order of the album.

Version of Hello Goodbye comes from forthcoming all-star tribute album to Sir Paul McCartney

November 17 sees the release of the tribute album to end tribute albums – a 34-song salute to Sir Paul McCartney, featuring the likes of Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Kiss, Barry Gibb, Dr John, BB King and more. Needless to say, The Art of McCartney comes in 327 formats of varying levels of deluxitude, from a simple two-CD set all the way up to a box set featuring a “specially designed Hofner violin bass shaped USB with flac files of the album”.

But you want to know what the music’s like, don’t you? Here’s a very special taste, in the form of the first new recording from the Cure for six years – a version of Hello Goodbye, featuring Sir Paul’s son James on keyboards. Have a listen and let us know what you think.

    Fine for what it is, but I don't see myself listening to it often. Nothing wrong with their performance, I've just never really cared for this song very much. Please don't kill me, Beatles fans. :)

      JC my love, I thought the same thing.. I spotted that lovely Damask lamp shade that I WANT.. So wonderful to have something Cure wise just pop in our laps this morning..

    Pretty nice. I often wonder what inspires Robert to decide between a relatively straightforward approach like this, Small Hours, the XFM version of Purple Haze, etc. versus more radically different versions like Witchcraft, Pirate Ships, World in my Eyes, the final version of Purple Haze, etc.

    Second time they've done something for a Beatles member. The last one was 'Love' by John Lennon for Amnesty International. I didn't realize Bob was such a Beatles fan.

      I'm guessing it is pretty tough to be British and his age and not be a Beatles fan. I'm a good decade younger and The Beatles are a huge influence on me still, first song I learned to play was Blackbird.

      I think Beatles, Pink Floyd, Stones and The Doors have been a huge influence for a lot of bands coming after.

      Ten years ago, Cure frontman Robert Smith spoke to Rolling Stone about how he adored the Beatles when he was a child but eventually moved on to punk rock: "When punk came along, I found my generation's music. I grew up listening to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd, 'cause that was what got played in the house. But when I first saw the Stranglers, I thought, 'This is it.' And I saw the Buzzcocks the following week, and I thought, 'This is definitely it.'"

    Mr Smith was also one of a select few celebs to have a question chosen to be put to Sir Paul on TFI Friday back in the mid 90s. Quite the Macca fan it seems.

    LUV 'Fab Four' Beatles since they saved us frm country music hell as small children... never cared for later chapters of beatles music, but i do like this version... its totally cack & everyone smirking makes it more fun

      if you're using Firefox, try some extension that changes your user-agent (not sure if there are any available for Chrome that really works), it's not an IP-spoofer but it works, mine is called "Random Agent Spoofer"

      What a wonderful way to start the day...been listening to this on repeat all day. Simon's bass is delightfully bouncy on this track...love the whole thing!

      Now...does one drop $100 for the deluxe colored vinyl box set to get only 1 new Cure song and 1 new Robert Smith? You bet your ass I did!

    Of course I think this is a great partnership, and an opportunity to be exploited for the Cure, i mean celebrate one of the greatest artists of all time, i'm sure that they at the time were big fans and admirers of Lennon & Co., however, i believed that the recording had been made recently, and not so remote in time, but is the same well, everything that's done by The Cure.

    If I´m remembering correctly, when the news of this Macca´s tribute was on the works, an article said one of the James McCartney´s favourites bands is The CURE and he wanted that the band were part of this tribute.

    So, despite the fact that this cover barely has The CURE trademark sound, Robert seems happy in his unique silly way, the opposite of Simon.

    Maybe this controvertial move is part of Robert´s "master plan" to attract new audience to the vast CURE music catalogue, (e.g. playing almost only hits since very long, long time with very few exceptions), instead of focusing in finishing the countless projects he´d mentioned for years which none of them has been released to date.

    The real point is that Robert is free to do whatever he wants, though the most of the fans we´re still craving for something totally fresh and brand new, including the 4:14 Scream.

    This cover works and that´s it. Just another simply collaboration and nothing more.

    I¨m honest, I really don´t like Beatles and I can´t recognize more than 5 or 6 songs, and I´m pretty sure that this cover won´t have a high rotation on my playlist, but this is the gift of the week and I´ll be listening to it with the deep wish over the back of my mind that Robert will end up finding the right path to going back on the track.

    In the meantime, we have this song and hundreds more to satisfy our inner insatiable Hungry Ghost of CURE.
