(Thanks @Ronald_Qiu)
Update: After 3 hours of mostly crap music, they announce the interview isn't happening. Will be rescheduled. Sigh...well, we all had fun on Twitter with this, so not a total waste of time. :)
Update (03/29/13): According to
Here's the interview on Goear, Soundcloud, and YouTube.
(Thanks to The Cure Rarities, @AaronLaw92, and The Cure Peru)
A few notes I took during the interview:
It was a very interesting interview. Main news was that they are going to record a new album with Reeves soon (I know, we've heard that before, just telling you what was said), and that he has finished the 2nd half of 4:13 Dream. Re-worked the lyrics, re-sung the vocals, thinks it's fantastic, and it's done. But doesn't want to release it and have it thought of as "the new Cure album". Might release it with the Live in Paris 4Tour DVD (I know, I know).
Thinks the South American shows will be the best they've ever played. Rehearsals have been fantastic and he's very excited about playing these shows. They will play songs from every album, and the shows will be at least 3 & a half hours long. But don't count on hearing 'Cut Here' live again. :)
Robert wants to put the South American shows out on a DVD, Tim Pope is fighting to make it a theatrical release. He's going along with Tim's plan for now. Also mentioned that they'll be using some 3D cameras for filming. Tim has been filming everything so far, the planning, the rehearsals, will be filming the fans, backstage stuff, and every show. Hopes to take the best versions of each song, from the various shows, and use them in the film. Will show what it's like to be in The Cure and everything that goes into planning & playing shows.
Talked about playing with Joy Division in the early days. Talked about Peter Hook having problems with The Cure, mainly due to jealousy about Simon. But things have been so much better between the bands now that Peter is gone. Said he loves New Order and was so nice to be able to play with them last Summer.
Said he really enjoyed just going out and playing shows last Summer without anything to promote. "We're out there playing and you either like it or you don't."
Has only written one good song in the last 6 months. Best song he's written lately is about something he saw in a documentary on television.
There was also something about him going through some emotional turmoil over the last 48 hours or so, and that it will probably produce a song. Not sure what that was all about, but didn't sound good. Hope everything is okay.
He was given a bunch of names and asked to give a one word answer to each. He couldn't confine himself to just one, but here's what he settled on:
David Bowie - Artist
Jimi Hendrix - Great
Rolling Stones - Surprising
Queens Park Rangers - Said he hates English football now
Mary Poole - Gorgeous
Technology - Ambivalence
Paraguay - Intrigued
Ian Curtis - Inspirational
There was also a nice discussion about 'Killing An Arab' and why he wrote it. Says that although the song has caused him grief over the years, mentioning skinheads showing up asking to hear it because they wanted to "kill arabs", it's great fun to play it live.
Robert once again made it very clear that he hates social media and most of us who use it. Hey, some of us are trying to use it to help promote the band and help out the fans. Don't hate us too much. :)
Maybe they cancelled it and no one noticed cause it is in spanish... Its been almost an hour since it was supposed to air. I speak spanish but i just tuned in.

ReplyDeleteThey said they are just waiting for robert to call.
ReplyDeleteHe's just late, as usual.... Star...
ReplyDeleteDon't you have his personnal number yet after all these years Craig? : )
ReplyDeleteYes, but can only use it for serious Cure emergencies. It's like the Batphone. :)
DeleteCooooool!
DeleteJust to make sure no one takes that seriously, it's clearly a joke. :)
DeleteI once held Lol Tolhurst's cell phone, which probably had Robert's number in it, but I didn't have a chance to check. I probably wouldn't have anyway, as Lol had lent it to me in good faith.
DeleteLook! It's the Cure signal!
DeleteI didn't know it was a joooooke :D
DeleteJesus he still hasnt called in? I went and left already
ReplyDeletewhat it is true is that they are playing better music...
ReplyDeleteWhy is everything with Robert so difficult?
ReplyDeleteI can't tell you how many times I've asked this same question. :)
DeleteAnd the answer is?...
DeleteBecause Robert is a control freak.
Delete...and a perfectionist.

ReplyDeleteDusted off and resung the leftover from 4:13 sessions and going back into the studio with Reeves....good news...good news!
ReplyDeleteShow at least 3 1/2 hours, songs from every album, guaranteed by Robert to be the best live show in Paraguay this year, won't have Cut Here in it. :-)
ReplyDeleteI only caught the last five minutes...did anyone record this?
ReplyDeleteSame here!
DeleteYes. Aaron has it and will upload in a bit.
DeleteGreat, and thanks a lot for the notes you took.
DeleteVery interesting interview!!! AWESOME!!! He wants to release so many things, and so far nothing it's been released.
ReplyDeleteCraig is the man...just saying!
ReplyDeleteI didn't hear the whole thing, but enough to hear Robert talking about very interesting stuff, such as:
ReplyDelete- the second chunk of the 2007/2008 songs with Porl are ready but he doesn't want to release it as a "new Cure album" and he's contemplating pairing it up with the recording of a live in Paris.
- There should be also a properly new album on the way with Reeves on guitar.
- Tim Pope will be filming the whole LatAm tour and make a movie out of it (a movie for cinema theaters in Tim's ambitions, just a DVD in Robert's more humble expectations).
- They'll be picking from around 60 songs for this tour and shows will be about 3 and a half hours long.
Exciting stuff overall. I'd take what he said about new albums with a good pinch of salt, as we know this type of plans are likely to change with Robert, but I'm really looking forward to Tim Pope's film of the tour.
It should be a poll where all fans from South America vote for a song that they would love to hear in this tour...so Robert have an idea what people really love from this part of the planet
ReplyDeleteDidn't get the 60 songs stuff. What happened to Wish Deluxe : problem with labels ? And to Sydney dvd ?
ReplyDelete"Too many secrets
DeleteToo many lies
Writhing with hatred"
2nd half of 4:13.. I want to believe..
We could all go on about the rest of the stuff until the cows come home..
Only one person (hopefully) knows what's going on..

Deletethey rehearsed a 60 song set repertoir.
DeleteNice itw. But 3D cameras? Is that really necessary? Guys, please, release Orange, Paris 2008 and Sydney, all in 2D, and then have fun with your new toys...
ReplyDeleteOh, of course, my support to him concerning the bad thing (I think he will soon regret to have said it when everybody's going to make speculations.)
ReplyDeleteAnd my big support to you Craig for what you do with the social media.
what's the problem with cut here now? I think it's great... i'd rather they quit playing wrong number or the only one.
ReplyDeleteWrong number was the first involvement of Reeves with The Cure. Playing it is like a celebration of that fact. :)
Delete(But while in the setlist issue... i'm going to see them for the 1st time... and i'm really gonna miss fascination street on the repertoire!)
yeah.. i get the reeves connection, and the guitar is good... just don't think the overall song ranks among their best.
DeleteSounds like the LatAm Film/DVD will be amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteNew album with Reeves!!! Just so happy the band is active and out there doing what they do better than 99% of the bands in rock-n-roll history!
CURE FOREVER!!! :) :) :)
Fun interview, lots of news. Can't wait to see the behind the scenes video, along with the concert footage!! And hey I'm with Annabel and Zap, I would LOVE to hear Cut Here live!! Por favor Roberto!!! Less then a week away for the first show of 2013!!!! Exciting days ahead!!!
ReplyDeleteCURE FOREVER!!! ;0)

Nobody has to know about the bad thing unless he decides to talk about it, in a song or whatever. Found him incredibly excited and happy to be in that Cure line-up. Alxays sharp and torn about thIngs. Hope he'll answer my letter...
ReplyDeleteThank you for recording and posting! Less than a week to go now, sounds very promising! Looking forward to" live it " online on this very website....
ReplyDeleteSo Paris 2008 DVD has not been released yet because of the redoing the vocals of "4:13 Part 2". In Orange DVD - didn't Tim Pope posted or tweeted about some weeks ago? About dusting off some film reels? That would mean it's in the works.
ReplyDeleteAbout reflections@Sydney not released yet I don't know. Maybe RS was busy with those vocals.
He has written one good song in last 6 month? So either he had wrote some more before or else the next album will be released in some years from now.
all in all it's good to have a status update from Robert.
I love this interview, Robert sounds really relaxed and happy to be on the phone with them. I giggled too much at "wrong number" hahah!! I cannot wait for Santiago!! Love love love to all of you amazing Cure peeps out there!!
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear that Robert redid vocals for the planned 2008 dark album, but it's a shame he won't release it soon. I want to hear them!
