Pearl on Gonjasufi's new album
From Stereogum:
"The mystical Californian bass music enigma Gonjasufi tends to go quiet for long periods of time, and we haven’t heard anything from him since his 2012 album MU.ZZ.LE. But he’s just announced that he’ll release his new album Callus next month (out 8/19 on Warp), and it’ll feature Pearl Thompson, former guitarist of the Cure, on a few tracks. First single “Maniac Depressant” is a short burst of moody, gothic psychedelia, and you can hear it below." (Thanks @is_maith_liom)

Cure Tour 2016 article
Hank Donovan wrote a really nice article on rediscovering The Cure and getting to see them twice on the current tour. Here's a couple of excerpts, but go to Effects Bay for the full story:
"They started the tour in New Orleans. I was able to purchase tickets for my wife and I at the Hollywood Bowl (excited to see this show in a such a historical venue). I figured if I see the set list (via setlist.fm – amazing site for the obsessed) in New Orleans, I would get an idea on what songs to expect for our show weeks later. They played 2 nights in New Orleans, and the sets were SO different. Okay.. they must be playing a Set A and Set B for each show. Both sets were awesome, so I was excited for either one. Then they played Texas.. different set. What.. is going on? By the time they played the Hollywood Bowl, they played 70 distinct songs on this tour. They were playing B-Sides, rarities, the hits.. old and new. It was clear, this was going to be a tour for the fans.
............
The show gave me a melancholy feeling though – and not because it’s the Cure. The crowd all had smiles. Everyone was singing along. So much love focused to the band. The melancholy feeling was.. is this the last Cure tour? It felt like a “last blast” for the fans. I didn’t want it to end. But then again, I’ve thought it was the end.. since 1989 and they always seem to continually bring it." (Thanks Reeves)
The Twilight Sad thank The Cure
From The Twilight Sad's website:
Hi everyone,
It's been over a week since we played the last gig of the North American tour with The Cure. I've now had some time to let the experience sink in a bit (I don't think it ever truly will tbh) and wanted to write a quick message of thanks. I'll try to keep it brief as I could write for days about how great an experience it was. Here goes.......
First of all I don't think we could say "Thank You" enough to The Cure for the opportunity. We were treated so well by the band and their crew. Their words of encouragement and faith in what we do by giving us the opportunity to play these prestigious gigs is something that we'll never forget or take for granted. The whole experience was inspiring. Each night once we packed up after our set and took five minutes to relax I headed out to watch The Cure's show. They played a different set every night and this in turn (plus some inspiring words from Robert) encouraged us to do the same.
I want to thank our crew: Chris, Andy, JP, Ray and our driver V. Without these amazing people we cannot do what we do.
Being able to share this experience with our friends, family and people who have helped/supported the band over the years was a wonderful thing.
To all the people that were introduced to our music I thank you for all the nice messages you sent and that I'd see after our set or wake up to in the morning. We met so many good people and many new friendships were made over the past 8 weeks.
Having Simon wear our t shirt and Robert's kind words about our band before dedicating "A Forest" to us on the last night was the icing on the cake of what was a great tour.
All the best to you and yours
Cheers
James

Cure mention in new Blink-182 song
"I can't sleep 'cause what if I dream of going back to San Diego. We bought a one way ticket so we can go see The Cure and listen to our favorite songs in the parking lot. And think of every person I ever lost in San Diego!" - Matt Skiba on 'San Diego' off Blink-182's record, California

What Is The Cure's Best Song?
From Rolling Stone:
"The Cure's ongoing world tour brought them to New York City's Madison Square Garden this week for an incredible three-night stand. Without a new album to support, Robert Smith and his band group dug deep into their catalog and broke out classics like "Fascination Street" and "Disintegration" along with newer tracks like "The Hungry Ghost" and "It Can Never Be the Same." Most nights they play for nearly three hours, going through four encores and always wrapping up with "Boys Don't Cry."
Now we have a question for you: What is the Cure's best song? Feel free to vote for an early favorite like "Killing an Arab" and "A Forest," a huge radio hit like "Just Like Heaven" and "Friday I'm in Love" or something more recent, such as "The Perfect Boy" or "Freakshow." Any song recorded by the Cure at any point in their career counts. Just please only vote for one song and only one time.
You can vote here in the comments, on Facebook.com/RollingStone or on Twitter using the hashtag #WeekendRock."
My vote went to the greatest song ever written, 'The Same Deep Water As You'. I mean, how is there even a debate about this? :)
Update: And here are the results...
10. Boys Don't Cry
09. Fascination Street
08. From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea
07. The Same Deep Water As You
06. Faith
05. In Between Days
04. Disintegration
03. Just Like Heaven
02. A Forest
01. Pictures of You

From the Record Crate: 'Boys Don’t Cry'
From The Young Folks:
Punk rock is one of the few cultural forces that can be described as both anarchistic and conservative. On one hand, punk bands use their music to preach about extreme politics and pseudo-revolutionary propaganda like the freedom fighters they claim to be. On the other hand, their single minded devotion to music that’s raw, fast, and political means they tend to get cliquey and dismissive when discussing artists that don’t fit into their limiting idea of what is or is not punk.
Considering punk rock spends a majority of its time trash talking mainstream pop, it’s easy to forget that many of punks founding bands were inspired by pop from the ’50s and ’60s. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Boys Don’t Cry, The American debut of The Cure and an album that successfully combines the diverging sounds of punk, vintage pop, and modernist sensibilities.
Boys Don’t Cry is a different beast than The Cure’s British debut, Three Imaginary Boys, since its restructured track list gives the album a different feel. Three Imaginary Boys focused on slower and weirder tracks while Boys Don’t Cry jettisons those in favor of recently released singles such as “Jumping Someone Else’s Train” and the iconic title track. Surprisingly, Boys Don’t Cry has held up better over time since it has a stronger song selection and a greater sense of immediacy. The British record oftentimes make them sound like pretentious, faux-art school intellectuals.
