Vote for NME's Ultimate Icon

To celebrate their 60th anniversary, NME has launched a search for the Ultimate Icon of the last 60 years. You can vote for Robert, or whomever you'd like, here. (Thanks )

Update (03-22-12): Mark Hoppus of Blink 182 picked Robert - "The Cure were such a huge part of what I listened to growing up. That’s probably my favourite band of all time, and probably the biggest influence on the way that I write music. I think Robert Smith kind of is that whole genre of music. I think if you think about dark, spooky indie rock, it’s The Cure.

He’s crafted that whole genre, and done it in very different ways over his career, from early albums like ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ and ‘Three Imaginary Boys’, which was very guitar-driven, into synthy stuff, then flamenco, weird druggy music like ‘The Top’, and then the likes of ‘Disintegration’. I think he’s just very creative."

    From NME, The band, who released their last album '4:13 Dream' in 2008, do not currently have a record contract, and Smith says they have no plans to record any new material. However, he said he'd be keen to re-release '4:13 Dream' as a double album after being dissuaded by the "fucking idiots who were around me" at the time of its original release.

    Speaking in an exclusive interview with NME which you can read in this week's issue, Smith drew parallels with the last time the band played at the festival in 1979, which in those days was a one-legged event held only at the Reading site. He explained: "It's almost like we’ve gone full circle and we’re back to the point where we’re playing Reading Festival and I'm doing it solely because I want it to be a good day."

    Smith continued:
    I can't see our career arc any more. I've got absolutely no idea. We haven't signed to anyone since the last album came out and the contract was up. I'm not even signed as a writer. To be really honest, if we're gonna do something it has to be really good.

    Sorry, I didn't think my previous posts showed up. My point is that Robert is basically saying that there won't be any new Cure music. I would expect that on a fan site like this that would be pretty devestating news. I know I'm bummed about it.

    I would be devastated if I hadn't read the same thing more or less in 1987, 1989 & 1992. I loved 4:13, personally felt it was the best of the post-Disintegration recordings. Only time will tell, can't jump the gun just yet...

    '4:13 Dream', while good, is not a masterpiece. 'Disintegration' and 'Wish' are masterpieces, and 'Bloodflowers' is close. 'WMS' isn't bad, and 'The Cure' would have been really good if Simon had given into the urge to beat down Ross Robinson with his bass, as overproduction is what ruined it.

    jpx.. in the same interview robert talks about how much hes enjoying the NEW songs the new four piece are making... sounds like there is new music to come to me

    I know I'm in a minority - but I really like The Cure - The Cure. Also 'Fake' is one of the best b-sides The Cure have ever done.

      At least on the point that "Fake" is a great B-Side. Like all the "The Cure" B-Sides of 2004.

    He is the boy who cried wolf. So many endings, so many new beginnings. When this ends properly I'm sure he'll let us know. For now, we'll all wait eagerly & patiently. Like others who have been around for some time I have got used to his threats of the end...
    As for the NME poll... If I get two votes I'll vote for Bob. Much as I love Robert Bowie always comes first.
