Here's an article from the new issue of Ireland's Hot Press magazine. Note that this isn't a new interview, just excerpts from the interview they ran last August. View larger image here. (Thanks Barry)
Geffen sucks. The best news we could get is that the deal was broken. May The Cure sign with Mute or Pias. Or even just a distribution deal with a major but never this kind of awful label.
LAT - From what I heard, Robert simply bought out the rest of the Geffen/SureTone contract. Guess it was worth it to be done with them, and given his recent comments to NME, I can see why.
Can't wait for a fresh start with either their own label or with one that might actually support them.
4AD would be fantastic and in a way it would be logic and deserves if they would sign and promote The Cure as Robert did so much for some of their talented artist : Lush, Pixies and Cocteau Twins. And they have the best catalog I've ever seen : The Breeders, Kristin Hersh, Throwing Muses, TV On The Radio, Lisa Gerrard, Lisa Germano, Dead Can Dance, Xmal Deutschland, Belly, Tanya Donelly, Barbara Carlotti... Lots of them are Cure fans, by the way. 4AD bosses are so respectful of musicians's art, and I love the design of what they release with that incredible guy. What's his name again ?
And what if The Cure would return to Fiction ? It would be moving to see the guys going back to Charlotte Street. The label is still in a very tiny mews, so typical in London. I went there a few weeks ago and I felt tears climbing. Fiction will always be their house, for me.
Yup, still there. I once saw RS in the street outside the building. I had a 12 hour connection in London and left Gatwick and wandered around Soho looking for Fiction's offices. He looked at me and I pretty much ran away.
They signed a few artists but not too many. Some are quite successful but not my stuff : Snow Patrol, Kate Nash, Kaiser Chiefs. Two others who got attention, especially in the UK, and really talented : White Lies and Crystal Castle, both Cure fans and friends who opened for the guys (at the O2 in London, if I do remember well).

So my list would be 1- 4AD 2- Mute 3- Fiction 4- Lost Music or Smith Music Ltd 5- Motown (but not very probable as Robert is not as good dancer as Michael Jackson)
I missed that article the first time around, so thanks for posting it, Craig.

ReplyDeleteI didn't even know Fiction was still operating, that would be great
