Night 2 of the LatAm Tour. Will we get some surprises tonight? Will we finally get THAT encore? Being vague there, so as not to spoil it for those who didn't see the list. Will Roger steal yet another of Jason's tambourines and throw it into the crowd? The answer to these questions, and others, will be answered tonight. :)
Here's the schedule for tonight's show: 6pm - Lautmusik, 7pm - Herod Layne, 8pm - The Cure. As always, you can find the current local time here or by checking the clock over there on the right side of this page.
I think we have 1 or 2 reporters lined up for the show, and as long as there are no problems getting a signal, we should have the live setlist and reports tonight. Fingers crossed! ReplyDeleteOk here is what I think is happening. The band clearly is going to do a DVD - great. They are going to play the same exact first set every show this Latin America tour. They are going to pick the best performance and "patch in" from other shows where there are mistakes and better angles. Tim probably directed the band to interact with the crowd in fteotdgs. Now for the encores my guess is they they will rotate them, film them, and splice them in for the DVD.

ReplyDeleteAs someone who is spending a ton of money to go see them in South America, I am very happy with the setlists and am sure that I will have a blast. I went to Reflections and was happy there too, and recognize that these are very different shows.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised at the complaints with the set lists! "Bananafishbones", "The Caterpillar", "Doing The Unstuck", "Mint Car" & "Fight" have rarely been played past the tours for their respective albums. Not to mention the fact that they play for 3+ hours!
ReplyDeleteThey have all been played last year on the Festival Tour. There isn't even one song that is a real surprise. A surprise would have been "Before Three" instead of this "End of the World" sh*t. "Gone" or "The 13th" instead of "Mint Car." "Birdmad Girl" or "Piggy in the mirror" instead of "The Caterpillar". Any other 'Disintegration' song except of the 8 they played quite regular the last two decades. Whatsoever.... South Americans will be happy anyway. They deserve this after so many years missing out on the band.

I'm a fan for ober 10 yesrs so when i read the european/nort american setlist i sometimes think "oj, that set sucked" but the thing id i don't even care about the setlist. It's my first time for every songs. And in brasil is like that for everybody that has less than 25 years. In buenos aires is even worse

DeleteAt least on the Swing tour we got varied set lists and some improvision. In my opinion the Swing tour was the last best full scale tour. Yes the 02, and '04 had flashes of brilliance and the Reflections shows were great. I really hope they don't think they can pull into Mexico City and get away with what they played in Brazil. With the exception of a few songs i think most were Played In 04 and 07

DeleteThe fact is the tours and line-ups and setlists have evolved a lot but we/some of us attend lots of Cure concerts, read maybe too much. Just check the number of songs they've been playing over the past 10 or 15 years and you'll probably be surprised. And surprised by the sounds, rythms, ways of being played too.
DeleteI still love them and go to see them as often as I can but imo, it was just so exciting to know that the setlist would vary! If you are seeing them for the first time, surely most songs are amazing, so why not vary it a bit for those who are going for the umpteenth time? It was for me, something that was so special about the band and set them apart from any other. I don't believe that fans last summer, in Rome seeing them for the first time, wouldn't have been happy with A Strange Day and Cold, which were on the setlist but not played, over some of the other songs which were? Whereas fans travelling from festival to festival could have had a change from LGTB and one or two others!!!
DeleteThe Cure always has a live repertoire of nearly 50 songs, if not more. That is damn impressive for any band.... but Cure are likely to play like 40 of those songs on any given night. Take this into account when you complain about a lack of variety in a Cure tour.... while other bands may have a completely different setlist night after night, they are not playing the same 3-hour marathons that would not only exhaust their live repertoire, but also their entire back catalogue as well.

Just waking up here in sunny& cold Copenhagen....i have been missing out on live reports because of time difference but let me tell you, waking up and reading the setlists from Rio and SP(and the next ones i am sure), reminds me of waking up on Xmas morning, knowing you're gonna go downstairs and open a present...there aren't many 30yr+ bands around playing 3hrs+ shows with a 45+ song setlists...i also agree that some songs could be dropped sometimes (High, EOTW) in favour of others.BUT as Dan Renfrew said above, for someone who's a fan and who has never seen them live and think it's the best concert they've ever seen, it must be an awesome experience.At least, as Cure fans, we still have a choice of either going or not to the shows,long may it last.

ReplyDeleteCure fans are so spoiled. Take a look at what Depeche Mode have been playing the last 15 years if you want to complain about the same songs being played over and over. And they don't even play live.
One year ago we would never have believed we would ever hear Caterpillar, Bananfishbones or The Top live ever again.
And you do remember the reflection shows?
If I were to go to my first ever Cure concert I would be upset if they didn't play Just like heaven, Push, FTEOTDGS, Disintegration etc etc.
Blessed were the days before the internet when every song was a surprise because you had no idea what they had played the night before.

ReplyDeleteSure, for us all sitting here watching the setlists appear it would be great to see different songs for each gig, and more obscure ones replacing the crowd favourites.
But......they are playing to people who probably have never had the chance to see the band play live before and they never will again, it is only natural they are going to play 'the hits'
With the tour being filmed for a possible DVD release, think that explains the similar nature of the setlists.
I think we should just be grateful the band are still going, and performing such wonderful shows, although it is also understandable that we are always wanting more.....
Just to add my two cents: I am Brazilian, Cure fan since 1987 and the April 4 show in Rio was my 6th Cure show. The previous one was the Reflections concert at RAH in London in November 2011 - which was really incredible. But I must say the hits-packed April 4 show in Rio was also very, very special with a very different vibe from the RAH Reflections one. Can't say one was better than the other. I am just glad that I was able to attend two very special Cure concerts in a 1.5 year window. Thanks very much, Robert, Simon, Roger, Jason and Reeves!

My two cents of both concerts and being a Brazilian
Delete- Crowd in Rio sang a lot of "ohoh-ohoohs" (apart from usual PFToday) and screamed and jumped more; SP sang so loud (at first songs and in the end) we couldn't almost hear Robert
- SOMEHOW the keyboard in Lullaby (RJ) got out of tune for some seconds! I don´t know how!! They and me laughed a lot! :)
- I guess "the Kiss me mini set" affected more the hardcore fans - the others kept their silence and imobility and some even left.
- High was very welcome... see, guys, we haven´t HEARD in here it for years (or never)
- HA! Robert realized with a smile that he could open a beer and the crowd would cheer like seeing him pole dancing
- So, I wouldn´t say one show blew the other; I wish SP screamed more with Caterpillar and stuff. I don´t count just staring at the band.
Result? I want to rob a bank to see what set they will play next...

DeleteGood evening, I just got back from São Paulo, as I live in the south of Brazil and had to travel by bus and plane to get to the gig.
ReplyDeleteIt really was awesome. I saw them in Rome last year and now again, and at least from my point of view, both shows were pretty similar, similar set list... Robert wearing the same clothes :p
I was surprised at how quiet the audience was... didn't look so much like Brazil... it was almost like we were in England.
Still, for the Brazilians who didn't have the chance to see them a few times in Europe like I did, it was a fantastic come back!
I took an awful lot of photos with a zoom camera and also got several videos and I would like to know if it is possible to post them to CoF?
Anyway If the people were on fire or not The Cure are not the most popular band in Brazil so the result is a huge success.
ReplyDeleteThe Cure are very big in Mexico and Argentina where everytime a new álbum is released is straight to number one.The cure álbum was number one in Mexico for several weeks and top ten also in Argentina....but I don't know anything about Cure in Brazil cos I just know argentinian and mexican people :)
By the way once again we should say how good the lightning departmen is.The projections are wonderful and yes I saw the cure in Europe last year and the setlists are quite the same but the new line-up are together longer so the are playing better for sure and I prefer The Cure with their own tour than festivals for the DVD. Although I'd miss Just one kiss on the DVD.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of The Cure from 89 until today and saw them live 6 times. They were always great, but I believe they are now in better shape than ever.
ReplyDeleteTalking about the set-list, each one has their own preferences, but The Cure have rarely been in South America, so it is normal to see them play some of the hits. As it was last year, the set-list is based on the story of the band albums, so again is understandable what they are doing.
However, I always thought that they have some inferior songs to their usual standard, such as Mint Car, Friday I'm In Love, Doing The Unstuck or Wrong Number, which are totally expendable ... But they are the ones who know best and I just feel blessed to have the opportunity to see them perform live such wonderful music, also knowing that they keep doing quality material, looking forward and improving.

Another way to point out that The Cure do mix up their setlists a lot if you look at it over a longer period of time: I have seen The Cure five times on five different tours. Yet there are 14 songs in the setlist above that I have never heard live.
ReplyDeleteYou know when we go to an amusement park, in those extreme rides? We never quite remember what happened when we were up there, upside down, or either spinning so fast, or shaking... The same when we dive into the open sea, or the first kiss in that girl that you like so much who made you spend nights of sleep wondering how that moment would be?... As if in an ironic play, what remains in our memory are those dissipated images, somewhat blurred and the sensation of a dream, sometimes déjà vu. To attend a Cure concert is much alike that. It's a so rich happening in images, colours, lights, fogs, weird poetry, memories and sensations... And, of course, dissonant sounds, psychedelic, distorted, low, sharp and medium notes flying around in the air and reaching our incautious and miserable ears and brain and... heart... All the perfect timbres of the instruments, dealed with respect and carefulness. Then, everything changes each 3, 5, 6, 15 minutes, just like that, all of sudden... You barely tasted the last course, you hardly assimilated what you just felt, what you saw, and Robert Smith and co. throw a handful of sensations over you. Obviously, everybody has their reasons why they like The Cure. And every one enjoyed the concert the way they felt like. And EVERYBODY is right. From my part, I can say that I got BEATEN UP. It was so much to see, to hear, feel, remember, assimilate. It was a new dish, a new movie, one after the other. Over and over and over. I left the concert ecstatic and worn out. Physic and emotionally. The Cure records' production is sublime and nothing else needs to be said. But it's live that they show what they've come to. Everything is heavier, more PRESENT, more breathable, tactile, tasty and flavored. Nothing came overnight. The band is 36 years old and there was a lot of work. A lot of ups and downs. They've learned how to work with the instruments, and deal with the right pedals onstage, to sing better, the right equipment... Also found out what is worth and what is not in being apart of the infamous 'showbusiness' and had the wisdom and humanity of keeping themselves upright and distant from all megalomania and falsity of that business. They're not hollow celebrities, they're artists dignified of that word. Mad geniuses that made it. For the sake and happiness of art and its admirers.
ReplyDeleteSo much together could only result in one thing: a perfect band, a perfect repertoire, perfect charisma and total commitment. Much better, total communion!
You know... Sometimes, I think of the world. Wondering this tiny blue globe in the sky, of the moon, and I wonder how many people stepped on this very floor since the old days. Philosophers, politicians, murderers, tyrants, kings, writers, painters... And how many offered to humanity simple songs, as well as powerfully intimate and emotional, like this band? And we're all aware, to play deeply our feelings, be them joyful or obscure, makes us to know ourselves better. The Cure got to do that. For themselves and for us. After all, we're fans of that. We try to understand that. It makes us closer to something divine and, as a result, turns us into better people. I believe that.
...My friends' words after the show, even one day after, two days after, show that pretty clear: - "Man, we got beaten up by The Cure!" - "It's like a dream" - "It's like I'm still dreaming" - "Best band of the world!" - "I'm still hypnotised!" and many others... What makes me feel that our senses are not used to that. That we need to have more experiences like this one. Anyway, words can't express with such accuracy. And that's not needed. It was memorable and squashing. Visceral and cathartic! Besides being a master's class for those who aspire to be an artist. Perhaps that's why they've delayed their retirement. There's still something to pass on. And there will always be.

Interlude, now more than ever, will keep going on in our peregrination, our saga in Terra Brasilis. Trying, humble and plainly show a little bit of it all. A drop in the Cure ocean. And, more than everything, making what they taught us: with passion, energy and devotion. Having fun, getting to know other weirdos like us and trying to bring some other people into our religion. For when the band comes back, one day, we'll have more and more disciples. Long live to The Cure!
