Robert interview in the Guardian Guide

The interview that Robert gave to The Guardian will run in the Guardian Guide this Saturday.

Update: In this article entitled "What should The Cure play at Bestival?", we get a preview of the interview. (Thanks lovecat)

Update 2: The interview is up! (Thanks Heron) And here are scans of the article. (Thanks John)

NME is also running a story based on this interview.

And if you missed Robert's recent Hot Press interview, the scans from Keith are here.

  1. I'll get it to read on the train down to Bestival on Saturday morning, so obviously I'll have no scanner but I'll see how some iPhone photos come out…

By the way, for people wondering what the Guardian Guide is, it's the little A5 magazine that has the TV listings and stuff, that comes with the Guardian on Saturdays.

  5. @perfect.murder if you can offer scans or even proper photos it's probably better than what I can get from an iPhone 3GS camera on a train!

But Craig I can email you them from the train on Saturday morning, if they're at all readable.

  6. Thank you, Daniel. Sincerely appreciate it. I'm hoping the Guardian will post the interview online, but if not, then at least everyone will get a chance to see it via photos/scans.

  8. Funny, Robert doesn't seem to be a very curious person after all. Got to love the man and his talent anyway :)

  9. super interesting quote by Mr. Smith. it's funny how we make people out to be something they perhaps aren't. kudos to him.

  10. "it's funny how we make people out to be something they perhaps aren't."

Maybe he's just lying as he always does in these interviews.

See you Saturday, Robert - I know you're reading this!

  11. I can't get excited about a one-off Cure show that's nowhere near me. What I care about is new Cure material. I hope we get a new album by 2014.

  12. good read, i love reading his interviews. robert, if you ever happen to read this - i appreciate the lack of politics in your songs. politics are alright, to some extent, but after a while it gets draining. kinda like musicians are trying to tell me what to think/how to act, when that's really my own business. plus, it can be too concrete. i like a little bit of mystery in my song lyrics.

  13. Does anyone else find it ironic that the Facebook page links to an imposter?

Can anyone get the real link to work? It's going to a dead page for me... Maybe because he hasn't logged in forever? (another forgotten password?)

  14. Nice!

Good that he finally gave some insight on a very personal song too..

I can relate to ABINK but on a different level to Robert.. I was adopted at the age of three and have very limited knowledge of my birth parents.. A couple of photos and some paperwork, which is great, more than most people who are adopted are able to find..
But obviously there will always be a question mark as to what/why/how etc.. When I first heard that song and then after a few listens I thought "My God, that was probably my mum's stream of consciousness before making that gut wrenching decision for whatever reason she had and probably still feels like that to this very day"

I have four beautiful kids and am thankful for them every day even though yes it can be tough at times, but I don't think I could live life having to give them up or having them taken away and not watching them grow and transform into the individual personalities they have now or watch them sleep like in the song..

So thankyou, Robert for helping me to apppreciate my children and providing a means of processing my own situation! :)

  15. Oops I almost forgot!.. I very much hope by some twist of fate that this song will somehow see the light of day..

  16. Unconsistant to pretend not being politicized and spending half of an interview talking about politics. Pretentious and dispising saying having no interest chatting with people you don't know. And a so-called journalist avoiding the real questions we all expected to ask : projects, line up, future.... 'Oh my god, this guy isn't that gloom, so smart, so cool' : how many times have we red this kind of stuff ? Nobody has bollocks to ask him about arts ? His own arts ? 'I feel uncomfortable with politicized musicians' ??! Ok so let's talk about your next album, honey !

I'm wondering why he keeps The Cure alive and public if he wants so much to do music for himself. And what about criticizing Björk not giving any interview ?! You don't feel out of this world, Robert ? But you're getting out of our world. Paris 2008 being broadcasted 4 times on french TV Direct Star for those like me who're still in love with Cure music despite of the bullshit we red for a few months.

  19. @davidaftertherain, I think you misunderstood some of his comments. Eg he wasn't criticizing bjork, and his comment about not talking to people on Facebook was about faceless strangers. I'm the same, I don't accept people I don't know as FB friends, unless they have a strong connection to someone I know.

  20. He has always been out of this world and saying and doing whatever he wanted to...that's why I love him:)

  21. Dear explodingboy, I didn't misunderstand anything, don't worry. Being surprised because Björk doesn't give an interview is a comment he could have avoid. I agree, it's not a direct critic but I'm sure you can imagine it's not positive. I'm sorry but he'd better do the same if he has so few to say and he's way of presenting things is not fair. Regarding the fact that he doesn't want to use Facebook or Twitter, I know him for such a long time that I can't be astonished. And to be perfectly clear I'm ok with that especially when the purpose is just to keep the business ablaze (greedy Lady Gaga) or when fans are trying to invade the personal life. BUT regarding the fact that you decides to deliver art, explains that it can't be free (Radiohead's liars), you can't announce things that won't come out or happen, and act like fans weren't there to support you for 35 years. He may consider some of them made mistakes releasing news too early or leaking things they shouldn't have. But we never asked for personal conversation, just reliable information. I feel Robert got bitter year after year and I can see why as fans and journalists said so much bad and unjustified things about The Cure. But I probably screwed myself believing he would be able to built a little bit more intimate just because we're much passionate by his work than he figures out. When he was very young he said he didn't understand why so many people were getting interested in what The Cure were playing. But he's now 52, himself totally mad of arts, so I hoped he would understand what we feel. He also said he was not very sensible, so... I love him and The Cure much more than I could manage to express. I love his freedom and he has to protect it but not at any price. That's what I was trying to say.

  22. I think that Bjork comment was just a little joke referring to how he was asked to do an interview and she didn't..just like a childish 'why do i have to and she doesn't' kinda thing, nothing serious! But I agree, I think it's slightly hypocritical of him to start off by saying he doesn't want to talk to the public and then going into great detail about his personal feelings on things mostly unrelated to music. Since he is a musician and he obviously does enjoy it in general (I don't think with his kind of character he would still be doing it 35 years down the line if he didn't want to), it's strange he'd prefer to avoid talking about that. Maybe he's just going through a bad patch creatively (in terms of The Cure anyway). I don't think the interviewer wouldn't have wanted to talk to him about the music. From a non Cure-new-material-hungry fan perspective though it's a good interview

  23. That was a fun interview. It reminds me how bright and articulate RS is. And, let's not forget, he probably gave this interview with two drinks in him!

It seems like we've been waiting forever for them to take the stage. And why won't Craig just tell us who's playing tonight? ;)
