28 years of News, rumors, minutiae about The Cure
I find it interesting that the general consensus regarding "FUKNNOTFUNK" (sp?) is that it is "strange" or "odd". It sounds a bit like "Never Enough" to me - perhaps a proto-version of it?
ReplyDeleteThe weirdest thing about the song is the title and spelling. I've seen it spelled "Funknotfunk", as opposed to the official "Fuknnotfunk". Is the official name an official typo?
i definitely think "funknotfunk" is the typo. remember to write these articles, people needed to retype the title tracks to get them out of caps lock. typos were likely.

ReplyDeleteLoving Matt so far. Very different from DT, but that's making me love him even more. I've watched all but Amy's Choice, and the only episode I didn't like was Victory of the Daleks. The rest have been fantastic.
Also, little Amelia Pond HAS to go on an adventure with The Doctor. She was wonderful! And River Song needs her own show. : )
Heard the whole Dizzy Deluxe thing now... and wow... the Instrumental Demo of Disintegration is amazing. Why didn't they play that guitar solo at the end in that way on the album? Also Plainsong alternative vocal version... not only the vocals are different... the guitars are louder and keyboards more quiet, fits perfectly. Entreat plus is good... although I'm dying for 24th May to hear the Dallas one.
ReplyDeleteOh, and Same Deep Water instrumental Demo 4:44 - 4:58 there it is again! :D The glorious guitar riff that is also featured in Closedown, Lullaby and Untitled. But using it in four songs of the same album was maybe too much for Robert in the end. :DD

ReplyDeleteCraig: I was hesitant at first, since I was completely in TV-love with DT. But Smith has been wonderful and fresh! Amy is terrific, as is their chemistry. I have seen through episode 5 "Flesh and Stone." Loved the two-parter with the Weeping Angels, and River's arc should prove to be very interesting!

But, I just flipped through my copy, and found *two* additional mentions of The Cure in the same issue (#1105/1106 June 4/11, 2010).
1) The Must List (The Top 10 Things We Love This Week): #9 DISINTEGRATION: Deluxe Edition, The Cure. Oh my goth! Has it really been two decades since the mope-rock icons' 1989 milestone? Dive back into this three-CD box set, featuring demos, live cuts, and, of course, salty, salty tears.

that's one helluva review from the quietus. obviously i disagree with most of it (although everyone always DID say i would grow out of the cure. shows how much they knew, afterall)

ReplyDeleteThe new mix of Entreat is not so good. Just louder but on the Original-Entreat e. g. the bassline sounds much better.
And the demo of "pictures of you" is the same as the one which was offered on the greatest hits site - just 74 secs. shorter.
I think they are from 1988.Why would RS bother to do a vocal for just 1 track in 2008 or 2009?I am one of the sceptics with regards to the Blue Sunshine lyrics, but i think Out of mind was recorded back then..just my opinion.

I can understand "it's the same as happens to everyone" before Closedown, but not the rest of the sentence. And I think there's a "for the past 12 weeks" at the end of the sentence before Fascination street, but I don't get the beginning of that sentence. Thanks for your help. Not that it matters much, but that would be one the mysteries of life solved for me, next time I'll ask about god and the meaning of life!

$29 (!) at amoeba...but i traded stuff in so it's not like i actually 'paid' for it...anyway, listening on headphones is an amazing experience, as it always was. i think the album sounds phenomenal. no real changes to the music i've gotten to know so well over the last 21 years...but basslines sound incredibly pronounced, which i love, i can still play it loud, the guitars are ringing...very pleased.

COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC, but of course, listening to everything Cure these days, with the Disintegration remaster and all. I have to say, I have not listened to The Glove's Blue Sunshine in a while, and I had to put on Disc 2 of the remastered edition, and I have had it on play for 3 days now! I know there is the controversy of "did robert do the vocals in 2006 or are they original from 1983", but regardless, what a great take on an already classic album. I personally think the vocals are from '83, and while I do love the original album with Landray doing the vocals, Disc 2 is like a fantastic new city to explore! A green city at that! Or psychedelic city!

Darrell, I know what you mean. Rolling Stone has consistently never appreciated The Cure's beauty. It's pretty shameful how the magazine's reviewers are tarred with prejudice, heaping ridiculous praise on even bad or mediocre U2 albums and attacking dark Cure songs.

Well here's some curespotting wierdness on the heels of the Disintigration release: The big power utility company in the Boston area is NStar. They now have, as the hold music on their automated customer question line, a loop of the windchimes from the beginning of Plainsong! Odd.

ReplyDeleteLOL if you really want to hear it, it's 800-592-2000. I'm not sure how you get into the automated system if you don't have an account, but if you get there you'll hear it for the few seconds while the computer looks up your answers.
