I find it interesting that the general consensus regarding "FUKNNOTFUNK" (sp?) is that it is "strange" or "odd". It sounds a bit like "Never Enough" to me - perhaps a proto-version of it?
ReplyDeleteThe weirdest thing about the song is the title and spelling. I've seen it spelled "Funknotfunk", as opposed to the official "Fuknnotfunk". Is the official name an official typo?
i definitely think "funknotfunk" is the typo. remember to write these articles, people needed to retype the title tracks to get them out of caps lock. typos were likely.
ReplyDeletei think the official name is what it is supposed to be.

ReplyDeleteAs in it's fuckin' not funk!
ReplyDelete(My deleted post was a typo opposite of Funk not Funk...)
Same here. V and I were saying the same thing just the other day. I can just see Simon coming up with the title, saying something like, "This is fuckin' music, not funk music."
ReplyDeleteOr something like that. : )

Weee!
P.S. How do you like Matt Smith so far?
Kate: Can having a Smith in the TARDIS be anything but brilliant? : )
ReplyDeleteLoving Matt so far. Very different from DT, but that's making me love him even more. I've watched all but Amy's Choice, and the only episode I didn't like was Victory of the Daleks. The rest have been fantastic.
Also, little Amelia Pond HAS to go on an adventure with The Doctor. She was wonderful! And River Song needs her own show. : )
Heard the whole Dizzy Deluxe thing now... and wow... the Instrumental Demo of Disintegration is amazing. Why didn't they play that guitar solo at the end in that way on the album? Also Plainsong alternative vocal version... not only the vocals are different... the guitars are louder and keyboards more quiet, fits perfectly. Entreat plus is good... although I'm dying for 24th May to hear the Dallas one.
ReplyDeleteOh, and Same Deep Water instrumental Demo 4:44 - 4:58 there it is again! :D The glorious guitar riff that is also featured in Closedown, Lullaby and Untitled. But using it in four songs of the same album was maybe too much for Robert in the end. :DD
ReplyDeletenothing exciting, but there's something here too
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteCraig: I was hesitant at first, since I was completely in TV-love with DT. But Smith has been wonderful and fresh! Amy is terrific, as is their chemistry. I have seen through episode 5 "Flesh and Stone." Loved the two-parter with the Weeping Angels, and River's arc should prove to be very interesting!
ReplyDeleteI am watching on BBC America, so the next ep is the one with the vampires. Are you watching some other feed?
Here's my review complete with memories of when I first came across Disintegration in 1989.
ReplyDelete"Disintegration demo" The last 2 min is aMaZing , makes me shiver

ReplyDeleteBBC REVIEW
BBC review says Disintegration propelled The Cure to true global success, but to be honest, Japan was exceptional.
ReplyDeleteI think popularity of The Cure went down gradually after the KMKMKM era in Japan.
I'm really sad now because almost nobady around me is interested in the release of Disintegration delux version here in Japan...:-(
Esten = S10
ReplyDeletei never would have thought of that!

re: that culture map review, they totally miss the point:
ReplyDelete"All of the darkness can be a bit overbearing at times; the lengthy dirge “The Same Deep Water As You” and the title track drag on at a combined 17-minutes plus. But these are the exceptions, because for the rest of the album, the band produces luxurious soundscapes in which the listener can’t help but wallow."
idiocy.
oh man how i love this album
ReplyDeleteBrilliant album!
ReplyDeleteGood reviews.

A review from Drowned In Sound
ReplyDeletehttp://drownedinsound.com/releases/15400/reviews/4140058
i just opened entertainment weekly and was excited to see a small cure review! with an A! :)
ReplyDeletei generally really trust EW's reviews so i'm glad they like it
See Kate's post 2 spots above. : )
ReplyDeleteyes, i already saw that it was added here :)
ReplyDeletejust commenting on it :)
Dear Craig:
ReplyDeleteI see that the review from Entertainment Weekly magazine has already been posted.
But, I just flipped through my copy, and found *two* additional mentions of The Cure in the same issue (#1105/1106 June 4/11, 2010).
1) The Must List (The Top 10 Things We Love This Week): #9 DISINTEGRATION: Deluxe Edition, The Cure. Oh my goth! Has it really been two decades since the mope-rock icons' 1989 milestone? Dive back into this three-CD box set, featuring demos, live cuts, and, of course, salty, salty tears.
2) The Bullseye (Here's a look at the pop culture news that was right on target this week): Squeeze and The Cure have new albums: We thank you from the bottom of our asymmetrically bobbed hairdo'd high school-outcast hearts.
(Lemme know if you would like scans :)
Another review
ReplyDeletehttp://thequietus.com/articles/04352-the-cure-disintegration-reissue-album-review
that's one helluva review from the quietus. obviously i disagree with most of it (although everyone always DID say i would grow out of the cure. shows how much they knew, afterall)
ReplyDeletethe individual song reviews were terrific.
In my opinion the vocals of "out of mind" are not from 1988. They sound like from 2008 or 2009. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteThe new mix of Entreat is not so good. Just louder but on the Original-Entreat e. g. the bassline sounds much better.
And the demo of "pictures of you" is the same as the one which was offered on the greatest hits site - just 74 secs. shorter.
I think they are from 1988.Why would RS bother to do a vocal for just 1 track in 2008 or 2009?I am one of the sceptics with regards to the Blue Sunshine lyrics, but i think Out of mind was recorded back then..just my opinion.
ReplyDeletei haven't heard it yet... but listen to the glove remaster... those are definitely new :/
ReplyDeleteUncut magazine in the UK has a great full-page review too! It's their current David Bowie issue
ReplyDeleteOff topic, and call me deaf or stupid, but there's something that's always eluded me. Can anyone make out what Robert says beween the songs on Entreat? I can understand "it's the same as happens to everyone" before Closedown, but not the rest of the sentence. And I think there's a "for the past 12 weeks" at the end of the sentence before Fascination street, but I don't get the beginning of that sentence. Thanks for your help. Not that it matters much, but that would be one the mysteries of life solved for me, next time I'll ask about god and the meaning of life!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I can help you with that. Here's what he says:
ReplyDeleteLast Dance - "...this is the same as happens to everyone, when you meet them a few years later. This is called Last Dance."
Fascination Street - "This is staying new. This is somewhere most of us have been for the past 12 weeks. This is called Fascination Street."
Marc: Can you get a scan of it for us?
ReplyDeleteCraig : thanks a lot!!
ReplyDeletehere in France, the deluxe edition (and Cure on a larger scale) is shot in flames (i mean shoot down) in the june issue of Rock &Folk review section.

Kate: Thanks, but I posted about that back on May 11th. : )
ReplyDeleteCrap, how did I miss that?!
ReplyDeleteD'oh, sorry.
Wow, I was the one who sent it in, even?! I must be completely losing my marbles.
ReplyDeleteTime for the weekend, please!
Ouch! That BBC review glorified the album then took one final stab at Robert...

Nice review from Pitchfork. Written by someone with knowledge. A fan!
ReplyDeleteyeah, i've been waiting for this pitchfork review. would have been a travesty if they'd rated it anything less than 10.0. good review.
ReplyDeleteYeah, what a great review from Pitchfork!! And they are really quite stingy with those 10.0 ratings!

$29 (!) at amoeba...but i traded stuff in so it's not like i actually 'paid' for it...anyway, listening on headphones is an amazing experience, as it always was. i think the album sounds phenomenal. no real changes to the music i've gotten to know so well over the last 21 years...but basslines sound incredibly pronounced, which i love, i can still play it loud, the guitars are ringing...very pleased.

got an email from ideal copy today that they shipped out both my cd and vinyl! yay!
ReplyDeleteHey, I got the UK import so I could get the glossy packaging, but has anyone noticed it's the same as the US version? Or am I wrong?
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance.

COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC, but of course, listening to everything Cure these days, with the Disintegration remaster and all. I have to say, I have not listened to The Glove's Blue Sunshine in a while, and I had to put on Disc 2 of the remastered edition, and I have had it on play for 3 days now! I know there is the controversy of "did robert do the vocals in 2006 or are they original from 1983", but regardless, what a great take on an already classic album. I personally think the vocals are from '83, and while I do love the original album with Landray doing the vocals, Disc 2 is like a fantastic new city to explore! A green city at that! Or psychedelic city!
ReplyDelete@Darrell
ReplyDeleteugh, disc 2 just makes me so angry :/
if it were promoted as "new vocals" and not "1983 rarities" i could probably enjoy it, but just listening to it gets me so frustrated. just my opinion of course.
Don't see this review posted here yet Craig, thought you would like to post it:
ReplyDeleteRolling Stone
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/reviews/album/17385/112002
Although I must say, this has to be the most LAZY review ever! What a disgrace Rolling Stone!
Darrell, I know what you mean. Rolling Stone has consistently never appreciated The Cure's beauty. It's pretty shameful how the magazine's reviewers are tarred with prejudice, heaping ridiculous praise on even bad or mediocre U2 albums and attacking dark Cure songs.
ReplyDelete3.5 stars out of 5 for Disintegration is insulting.
By the way, has anyone noticed that the EU version of the Disintegration rerelease lacks the glossy packaging that previous Cure rereleases from Europe had?
I agree, Rolling Stone has never covered them with more than these tiny blurbs, but if you're a Lady GaGa fan they are your magazine, when 4:13 Dream came out, I almost missed the review it was so small
ReplyDeleteI bet if Debbie Gibson came out with a new album it would get a bigger spread
ReplyDeleteWow. You'd think if you were reviewing a remaster of a classic album, you might at least make some comment as to how it sounds.
ReplyDeletetotally off topic but can someone please answer me if all the american deluxe editions cd's came with an outer cardboard slipcase? or is it just the disintegration deluxe?
ReplyDeletecheers
Deadboycraved, yes, all the previous North American Cure deluxe rereleases had outer cardboard slipcases.
ReplyDeleteNow, would someone PLEASE answer my question about whether they also had European versions of the reissue of Disintegration WITHOUT the glossy packaging that previous European Cure reissues had? I need to know if it's just my distributor or if all were made that way.
thanks muldfeld.. cant answer yours sorry ,, only got the american disintegration cd fr some reason..
ReplyDeleteThe Disintegration set that I have (the UK one) does not have the same glossy cover as the previous remasters.
ReplyDeleteNo problem, DeadBoyCraved.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the answer, AndrewV127. Guess I'll return mine, then, and keep my US version.
just came by to say happy anniversary to cof :)
ReplyDeletevote for Disintegration (and HOTD and Pornography) on NME's poll for the best album of the 80s!

Craig, you might put this link on the blog. not easy to go against Closer, but The Cure should be number 1 as far as i'm concerned.
just got the vinyl from amazon!
ReplyDeletewell it didn't actually arrive at my house; my mom stopped at the post office to pick up another package she hadn't been home to sign for, and the man said they had another package for us as well that he might as well give her :)
amazon says delivery estimate is for the 17th

Well here's some curespotting wierdness on the heels of the Disintigration release: The big power utility company in the Boston area is NStar. They now have, as the hold music on their automated customer question line, a loop of the windchimes from the beginning of Plainsong! Odd.
ReplyDeleteHey, Justin - what is their telephone number? I want to hear this! :)
ReplyDeleteLOL if you really want to hear it, it's 800-592-2000. I'm not sure how you get into the automated system if you don't have an account, but if you get there you'll hear it for the few seconds while the computer looks up your answers.
