We had the same problem at Ahoy '08, when we were standing at about 6 to 10 rows from the stage. The problem is that you're standing right underneath or even in front of the stadium speakers, so the sound you're hearing is mostly from the podium speakers, mixed with the reverb from the hall. That can sound terribly unbalanced and echo-y in some cases.

On the flipside, you do get the best atmosphere when standing near the stage. In the seating areas, the trade-off is the other way round: you get better sound, but you're not quite "in there" with the band.

@Emilia: If you look at the original video clip for A Forest, you can see Simon playing the bass with his fingers there. I haven't seen him do it much anymore after that though.Nicohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15252066381687104702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1886767188052333210.post-1448610734467103932011-11-17T09:27:30.182-06:002011-11-17T09:27:30.182-06:00I'm the only not particularly satisfied about ...I'm the only not particularly satisfied about the snow. Not in the least because my mate had gotten inside, i didn't have a cellphone with me, didn't have the keys to the Hotel either, and didn't feel like freezing to death on my jolly own outside waiting for him to come find the icepick that i would've become on the porch of the Hotel. In the end, quite some time later, the security people cooled down a bit, and decided to apply the "one out, one in" principle, so that ultimately, everybody was happy and lived long ever after. As far as i'm concerned, they did a good job, and should be applauded for remaining ever polite and diplomatic with the rude bunch of nasty people impatient, merch-hungry fans can be.

But all this to say that, since all T-Shirts and scarfs and such are also available online, if you see there's too much folks waiting in front of the merch booth, do yourself a favor, and just go grab a couple of beers instead of joining them :)"Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17355214926335490436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1886767188052333210.post-40247135279609331032011-11-17T09:11:56.139-06:002011-11-17T09:11:56.139-06:00From Laurent (note that the screen print IS availa...From Laurent (note that the screen print IS available online now):

"Having had a look at the merch that is available for purchase online, i just wanted to "warn" any possibly interested fans that there is one item that, so-far, appears to be ONLY available at the venues themselves, namely the poster you can see here: http://www.pbase.com/craigparker/image/139662860

The photo is actually of a stand that is standing next to the merch booth, but the poster looks just the same, although somewhat smaller :) At 15£, it's a darn expensive poster, but it is printed on fairly thick paper, and is definitely meant for being framed. And it's 15 quid very well spent, if you ask me, because it's friggin' gorgeous! I'll be sure to get mine framed, together with my ticket right underneath!

About the merch, there was sort of a "scene" at the Londen gig, two days ago, at the booth near door 7 (or 8... can't really remember which one it was). One of the security people got a bit hysterical, because there was too much pushing and cramming to her taste (admittedly, there was quite a crowd), so they locked the doors between the hallway and the room with the merch booth. The idea was to first let the people who were already inside do their business, and then let a fresh piece of crowd in. So on it went, and everybody kept waiting outside, gazing at the goodies. A little before the doors were about to be opened again, there's this guy from the RAH in the Hallway shouting about that he wanted to give people a heads up that for a lot of the T-Shirt designs, the stocks were already used up, "so as not to disappoint you too much, as I know you have all been waiting a very long time". Obviously, if you want people to rush inside like a pack of mad cows, that is the thing to say. So a few moments later, there is this security guy, kindda rather short, slim fellow that doesn't look all that impressive bouncer-wise speaking, coming in from the merch room and stepping in front of the middle of the 3 doors separating it from the Hallway, doing his utter best to shout a warning message that they would open up the middle door, but that from the moment there would be any pushing and/or pulling, they would be closed again, and definitely this time. The only problem was, the volume of the chatter mostly exceeded his voice, so not only did most people not hear him, most of those who actually did had grown so impatient they really didn't give a toss. What happened next is, the doors went open, the crowd started coming through, and the not-so-tall security fellow started getting pushed away. The scene somehow reminded me of the epic and heroic "Death of Mufasa" scene from The Lion King, with our security guard being the hero trying to contain the wild, and let's face, a tiny bit rude crowd. But at the same time, what also happens is that, as a crowd, you start getting this collective feeling of "well, this guy obviously isn't going to stop us, so f**k 'im, we're coming through!" So the pushing only got worse, and instead of being the "we're a rude bunch of people and we don't want to calmly enter the room one by one" kind of pushing, it became the "we're deliberately ignoring the hell out of you, insignificant security guy, so get out of our way before we run you over" kind of pushing. This, to say the least, blew a fuse in the guy's head. Being the ever polite English gentleman that he is, he started shouting at the top of his lungs, and this time you can bet that we heard him, that "Alright Ladies and Gents, that's it! We're closing the doors! Thanks you very much!" And so he did, and he made it very clear that he had no intention whatsoever to open them up again any time soon. Less punchy, more rounded, i.e. not the kind of sound that suits Descent. And since Simon seems to play exclusively with a pick nowadays, he may not be comfortable switching to his fingers on the fly.

Also, not included with the posted video, I noticed Simon probing the stage with his foot a few seconds later, seemingly still in search for his pick.
